It doesnt really matter. I would sit across but if you want to talk to the other couple then sit next to him. If you dont like say the man in the other couple sit next to him and have the woman across from you to make it easy to talk.

All I can tell you is that my husband and I sit next to each other so that we can face our friends together when we talk across the table.

When two couples are dining, proper etiquette calls for the woman from one couple to be seated to the right of the man from the other couple. At a square table this results in the men facing each other and the women facing each other. The wives end up seated to the left of their husbands.

I sit next to him on his left side to be exact. I sit next to him because he is my husband and if we are going out with another couple why wouldn't I sit with him? I sit on his left side because I am left handed and he is right handed and if I sit on his right we bump elbows.

Next to him, it might be akward for the guys to sit together, or for you to sit with your friends husband, but if not, then sit where ever you want.

Sit next to him and if someone else occupies that chair, tell them to get up and move, they're sitting in the wrong place.

You sit next to him, same goes for the car, you sit in front, if he's driving.
