does anyone know if a Massey 231 38 hp will run a new holland 617 mower?

    find out the true horsepower recommendation on the mower and that will be the deciding factor. go to the below website:

    I would go to the New Holland website and ask. I would imagine they are going to recommend a New Holland motor. However, if you talk to a technician you may find that it will work fine although it will void the warranty. If you already have the Massey, why not give it a try. The worst that can happen is that it won't have enough power and then you will need to purchase a New Holland motor.

    The mower has a 3-point hitch and 540 rpm PTO, and the tractor does, as well. Your tractor may be a little underpowered, but I was unable to find out for sure.
