What are the "outgassing" products when O2 is run through clear, flexible, vinyl tubing?
Since the manufacturer advertises the tubing as clear, flexible, vinyl tubing, I assume it to be plasticized PVC. When I change tubing it takes 48 to 96 hours to "passivate" the new tubing. During this time I experience severe headaches, irritated eyes, sinuses, and throat, and heightened anxiety and irritability. After about 4 days, this "newness" odor and the symptoms dissipate.
The only hard data I have on this process is that the O2 flowrate is 4 L/min. at 23 C and 1 atm, and that the tubing is 3/16 in. OD (probably 1/8 in. ID) and 30 ft long. (about 3 mm ID and 10 m long)
Is it possible with this scant data to estimate the quantity and type of gases being produced?
2 AnswersChemistry1 decade agoWhen did 25°C become standard temp and what is standard volume at that temp & 1 atm?
When I took Chemistry 1 mole of gas filled 22.4 L at 20°C and 760 mmHg (Torr.)

One run of this video per log-on is certainly sufficient. Having it run every time you look at a category or question is aggravating in the extreme.

3 AnswersEarth Sciences & Geology1 decade agoHow are we going to handle the oxygen pollution?
When we finally go into industrial production of hydrogen to power our vehicles we will be producing 8 tons of oxygen for every ton of hydrogen. Simply venting this to the atmosphere as industries are wont to do will produce serious hazards around the production plants, ranging from increased fire danger to plant toxicity to animal toxicity, depending on concentrations. Depending on diffusion and wind to dissipate the oxygen is the same mistake we've made throuought history with airborne pollutants.
5 AnswersEnvironment1 decade agoWhy is the atmosphere 80% Nitrogen and 20% Oxygen (roughly)?
The Kinetic Theory of Gases yields a ratio of 47% N2 to 53% O2 if other gases are ignored and there is no voluminous chemical reaction between N and O.
I have my own pet answer, but I'm curious to see what answers others will give, and if any will agree with mine without coaching.
