Am I getting screwed over at my job? Should I quit NOW?
I've posted another question about this job in regards to quitting it. I also want some people's opinion about if my employers are doing anything illegal with how they treat/pay us. I work at a motel at the front desk. I make $8 an hour with NO benefits. I get no vacation time, no sick time (we are seriously not allowed to call in sick), and I have to work every holiday for the same pay (because of this I can't spend time with my own family for Christmas this year). I seriously live paycheck to paycheck with no opportunity to save anything. The poor housekeepers have to work 15 days in a row making less than I do. I do some of the overnight shifts which go from five in the evening to nine in the morning and I make NO overtime for it.
I've looked into jobs in town that would pay me around $10-12 dollars an hour with benefits and retirement and that good stuff. A couple people here have up and quit with no two weeks and I mentioned to my boss that I would be professional and give proper notice when I leave, to which she replied that she would NOT accept it. She laughed after she said that, so I really hope she was joking. If you haven't read my other question, she's been trying to get me to commit to her for FOUR years. I have told her twice that I cannot do this. I don't think she's hearing me. If I do quit now, she'd have one other girl to run the counter. They would seriously be SOL. My boyfriend says they've dug their own grave by not hiring more people and relying on me so much. I guess it's a moral thing that keeps me here but I'm MISERABLE. I'd love to go to college and I know that won't happen if I stay here.
I want to do this as professionally and as mature as possible. I'm also wondering if my boss tries to make me stay if there is any legal recourse. I'd like to be able to cite certain laws (I live in Wyoming) that I can cite to make my point. I need to leave this job before I end up staying here forever!!!! ANY help would be great, thanks.
I've decided to put in my notice for December 15th being my last day. This gives me time to get a new job and train a new person for my job so they're not short-handed. Thanks for everyone who's helped me!!

as I have worked for different hotels for over 10 years I think i can answer this for you..
as for the pay with no insurance, sadly you get paid what you get paid, there is no way around that.. they do not offer insurance because they do not have to.. also in the end it would cost you more to have insurance , cause it would come out of your pay, and since you are working pay check to pay check that would not be a good thing.
AND since a hotel is open 24/7/365. working holidays and weekends are normal. AND NOT getting holiday pay is VERY legal.. not nice but LEGAL..
also working and not getting paid over time is legal too. just as long as you are getting paid there is nothing illegal they are doing..
sorry your boss laughed at you but from her point of view there are a ton of people that will take your place at your job, and sometimes for less pay.. she knows this.. they might spend about 5 seconds on 'i wish she was still here' but after that they more then likely never remember you..
I know you think they might tank if you leave, but trust me, they won;'t, it will take them all of about a week if not less time to find some one to re-place you..
unless your boss is blackmailing you into staying and you can prove it, there is no law on your side that will help..
My suggestion is to stay and keep looking for another job.. apply to colleges and get financial aid .. it can be done..

Well, first of all, you are worth more than this. Don't take sh*t from anybody!
I would encourage you to call an attorney and get some free legal advice. They can probably help you a lot.
Before you take any action, have all your ducks in a row. Arrange to have a new job BEFORE you quit your old one. I admire and respect the fact that you're choosing to be professional. Good for you! That is a wonderful reflection on your strong work ethic and your good character. Someone like you would be very esteemed in any workplace.
You see, your boss knows how responsible you are. She is taking advantage of it.
Continue to remain polite and professional with your boss and co-workers, even if things get ugly. You are doing the right thing. And you would do very well in college, so I wish you good luck! God bless!

You need to check with your state employment laws. I know that in some states when you work in a hotel or some type of retail, some overtime pay may be exempt.
Check the link below, they should be able to answer all your questions.

If you quit, she can't "refuse to accept it" - slavery has been illegal for a long time! Nothing you list that she does is illegal. It doesn't sound like the best job in the world, though. Find one of those better jobs that pays more, and take it.
Good luck.

Try to find out from others what your general standing is within the company. Are you liked by your fellow employees, your superiors, your subordinates? I would imagine that you could simply put in two weeks notice and leave it at that. Are you wanting a reference from someone? If a future company you wanted to work for called this company to ask about your work there, it would be a good idea to find out what they think about the work you have done and are doing for them.
