After 16 weeks of receiving benefits you are entitle to claim housing benefit but only the interest on your mortgage is paid......... you don't get a lot.

Unfortunately you cannot claim Housing Benefit from the Council. This is only payable for rented accommodation.

You may be able to claim Council Tax Benefit however.

If you are receiving Income Support or Income Based Jobseekers Allowance then you may be able to claim interest payments after a qualifying period.

You should check with your lender to see if you have an Insurance Protection Policy to cover your Mortgage, or enquire if you could have a payment Holiday while you sort yourself out.

You'd get a little help but it would only be enough to cover the interest of your morgage and not the morgage itself. Most morgage lenders would allow you to go on to a interest only morgage for a few months so the council would cover that but it wouldn't be long running. As your house is capital and in there eyes an income they would expect you to sell up and move into rented accomodation if you were struggling with your morgage. You'd also only get help if your on a low income, and i mean low. The council don't take into account any other debt you have to pay just if you earn enough to pay your rent/morgage. If you do earn enought o pay the morgage but not enough to pay your bills you will get no help at all.
