What are my options to dispute a check card payment that a restaurant falsely charged me for?

I went to a restaurant/bar the other night, had a dispute with the bartender because he over charged me for drinks. He ended up supposedly correcting the problem, gave me a check for the right amount. I charged it on my check card, gave him a tip, and left thinking it was alright. I checked my account when I got home, and it has 2 pending payments on it, one for the initial amount, and one for the amount it was changed to. I am wonderring what my options are to take action on this..? It's a basic bank check card with a Visa logo on it. Can I dispute it at the bank, or is there some legal action I may want to look into?

Just to let you know he may have corrected it as he said. I dont know about the company they use but with the company i work for it takes days to correct it... we have customers calling back all the time and when we give refunds or change anything (even when you put a tip on the card!!) it will show up as seperate transactions. Do you happen to have a recipt? keep checking your account. Tell your bank and see what they say most of them offer a free bank card transaction fraud investigation. If they dont help, go back to the bar and try and get your money. After all that, then you can do something legally. But Most banks will investigate and get your money back for you!!

    Good Luck! hope i helped!

Check your bank account today - did both payments clear? If both of those pending payments cleared, then call your bank ASAP to report what happened - even better if you have a copy of the receipt you signed.

What probably happened was - when the restaurant swipes your card, they put it in for a certain dollar amount - in this case, the overcharged one - then after you sign the charge slip, hopefully (in their eyes) adding a tip, they send in the real amount to the bank, and that's the payment they take. It's more or less a hold on your money to make sure the restaurant gets theirs.
