How do Christians reconcile the Jesus in Matthew 10: 34-39...?

He doesn't seem so loving, caring, and accepting here. Did the author make a mistake? Why is Jesus so jealous that we might have a closer relationship with our mother or father instead of with Him? He seems quite threatening.

Matthew 10:34-39 "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it."

Update:

Gutbucket...Could you please explain the context to me. It seems pretty straight forward.

Update 2:

Very good answer frazier...in particular,"The world needs to reconcile this against their stereotype of Jesus and Christianity." I guess I just can't get over the idea that Jesus' love is conditional upon my faith. I really mean no disrespect, but it really does seem to me unlikely that the son of God would have such an inferiority complex as to be such a craver of attention. I know you'll think I'm missing the point, but ultimately that's what it is. I do appreciate your honesty and in some ways respect your beliefs more than the "Jesus = Love" people. However, I also fear your beliefs more as well.

You need to read that in context. He is telling us, warning us, that not everyone will enter heaven. You're saying this isn't a loving verse! It certainly is. He is telling us ahead of time that only those who truly love Him and put their faith in Him will go to heaven. We must realize that it's no longer about us, but about Him. That's why he said you must lose your life to gain it.

As for the others, that is God's justice. Consider yourself blessed to have read it as a warning. And you're saying how do Christians reconcile this? Why should we reconcile this? We know our Jesus. The world needs to reconcile this against their stereotype of Jesus and Christianity. God says His word is a double edged sword...not a fluffy marshmallow.

He is talking about the fact that Christians would be hated, that even our own family members would turn against us for following Christ. And a Christian should love God and Jesus more than any human they know, and should put loyalty to God and Christ above their loyalty to their family.

It's not a mistake. Jesus needs to be first in our life. For Christians not in Christian families, there can be a huge conflict. That's just how it is.

This is God. You do not love your family more than God. This is expressing that you must make a sacrifice to follow Jesus.

this is a perfect example of how religion poisons peoples minds. love me more than your kids, more than your parents? kill your kids if they curse at you? This is a loving message!?? no wonder religions are still killing each other. christian moral compasses are so messed up. its sad. even sadded that they cant see that it is. they'd rather twist a horrible teaching to something good, rather than come out and say "NO, will love my kids more than ANYTHING" and this book is wrong. hope some of these people dont have kids!!! this is exactly why kids are being killed by their parents right now for being witches in africa in gods name. andrea yates must be a christian role model then!! so sad so sad
