2001 Silverado 4x4 question on transfer case?

I have a 246 transfer case that was damaged badly. I have a 246 case from a 03 that has the parts transferred to the good case, how do you know where the cam that the drive motor turns is set? like 2 hi or 4 lo? I think I have it right due to the groove in cam but want to know before install? thanks! also old case had a spring that put tension on cam ? is it necessary? 03 did not have it?

Update:

are you saying that as long as the pin on the cam spring assembly[runs the yoke] is aligned in slot of cam, it is good to go?

the encoder motor should align the groove in the cam to the mounting holes for the motor. as long as you line the groove to the encoder motor, you should be good to go there, just rotate the motor/cam until the mounting holes line up. as far as the spring, i haven't had the 246 apart in so long, i have no idea...sorry. visit my source and start a topic, they should be able to assist you there.
