It is never too late to join the PGA. But you must work harder on your game to be a scratch player specially at putting. I personally think that professional golfers who are in the PGA putts beautifully. They can make mistakes in the fairway but when they are on the green a three-putt is definitely a no-no. Work on reading the greens!

I hope you're looking for some truth here and not just some encouragement because the simple truth is you are a long way from being a tour calibre player. Your 5 handicap just doesn't cut it. A middle of the road tour player would have a handicap rating of plus 4 and the last figure I heard for Tiger was plus 7 or 8 That means a journeyman would give you 9 shots a round or 36 over a 72 hole tournament and Tiger would beat you by over 50. You can believe it these guys are that good. Continue to work on your game and try to be the best you can be. Test yourself by entering local and club tournaments to get an idea of the things you have to improve upon. Getting games with the pro shop staff at your favourite club will do wonders for you as well. Good luck.

You are still gonna need to lower that handicap by 7 or 8 strokes to even be in the same realm as those guys on tour. And then you will need to learn to deal with the pressure of playing big tournaments.

Sorry, but I dont see this happening. Im playing around 5 right now, and I would have a hard time winning the club championship at my home course, let alone play on the tour.

Do yourself a favor and examine the scores it takes to get through q school. Not just the finals, but every stage. This will basically tell you what you need to shoot to advance.

The golf course doesn't know or care what your handicap is or how hard you work at it, this is a bottom line game. If you want to play on tour, shoot in the 60s virtually every round you play on the hardest, longest courses you can find. IF you can do that under the most intense competitive pressure, you can play the game for a living.

If that is not you, it is still the best game in the world that you can enjoy your whole life!

Source(s): +1 hdcp and not even close to being a pro!

no it not too late to join the tour. but it would be very hard for you to make it with a 5 hccp. even on the nationwide tour those guys 2 to strach. and you have to improve on your putting skill as well. the reason why some of the guys on nationwide tour haven't made it on tour because their short game is not strong (making putts when needed under pressure). try a few other mini tour events to get a better sense where your game stack up and go from there. good luck...

sure you can. test how good you are in amateur tournaments. if you cannot handle the pressure from those tournaments, then you know you're not cut out to play professional. if you can, then beat the field in order to get recognized enough for an invite from a sponsor who would like you to play in the pga tour. best case scenario.

btw...who cares about the score card. many weekend golfers claim how they are in the single digits but f-ing suck!

In my opinion you would be wasting $2,500. for the qualifying . Many have said the courses are difficult and the competition very good. That is the truth. Unless you have the talent of Camillo Velligas look for another field of endeavor to make a livelihood.

Its not too late but a 5 handicap is not going to cut it, I have a good friend who is a scratch, won the state am in MT at 20 and played a US open qualifier at wingfoot and got taken apart. You need to be a solid scratch golfer who can rutinely drop 15 foot putts (my friends major weakness is on the green)

I always recommend reading "Q School - Golf's Fifth Major" by John Feinstein to give you a sense of what your are in for to try to qualify to earn money playing golf at any level. 4 to 6 rounds of tournament level golf creates some serious mental strain - so your game has got to be bulletproof first if you want to compete.

    Good Luck.

It is never too late if you have the game. But there are no 5 handicappers on tour.
