What is the best oil to massage...down there. To prevent tearing during labor?

One of my girlfriends used jojoba oil and she said it worked great.

I would like to know what you used and it if worked or what you heard does a great job to prevent tearing.

I would also like to know in what week should I start these perineal massages...

Thanks!

I did perineal massage with my 3rd, used Extra Virgin Olive Oil and hubby's help (He volunteered for the job he knew were it would lead LOL)

We started at about 25 weeks and continued every couple days through D-Day...

I didn't tear at all.. I did have a mild stretch (Take hold of your arm and gently stretch the skin until it sort of burns, feels irritated a little bruised , that sort of feeling), so I felt a bit tender sitting down, it cleared up within 2 days... Far better than the episiotomy I had with my first and the tear I had with my second (I had them in the 80's prior to perineal massage techniques being widely talked about..)

I highly recommend giving it a go the mild strech was so much better than the other 2....

First weighted 8 lbs.. Episiotomy due to complications..

    Second weighed 6lbs7oz..

    Third weighed 9lbs4oz...

    Oil For Perineal Massage

  • 1 decade ago

I had no idea that you could do that to prevent tearing, until I had my son 6 years ago. I was induced and the nurses would come in every hour or so and tell me that they were going to rub some oil and do a quick perineal massage. I never tore at all. But I never massaged down there until the day I had him. So I am going to have this baby at the same place and I will tell someone please if they can do it again.

I would do it myself but I don't think I feel comfortable with that.

my midwife did a massage thing that was supposed to help. i don't really know if it did or not because i still tore pretty good, but my sons head was very large (90th percentile) and he was in an osterior (sp?) position which didn't help and his arm came out with his head because he had his arm up "waving" so the odds were against me. plus i had some difficulties, my midwife said she usually likes to continue stretching the vagina between pushes but i had to push even without contractions because of the problems my son was having. sorry i don't mean to scare you i guess i just want to to be awear that labor no matter how much you plan may not go as you plan. tearing wasn't all that bad, it stings quit a bit though. i was 19 when i had my son too. basically the best way i could describe birth to you would be imagine trying to **** out a 12 pound bowling ball (theres alot of pressure on your rear so it feels more like you are pooping baby out. and if you tear or have to get a episodamy (sp? again sorry) it will sting but luckily that part only has a few minutes and then your done.

your best bet would be olive oil...you can add a capsule of vitamin E oil if you like.

make sure the massage is pretty vigorous, but not painful...while massaging you want to stretch out the vaginal hole a bit to simulate the birth--obviously not exactly since you don't want to hurt yourself lol but stretch and massage the area once or twice a day.

you know, jojoba oil would be good too, most oils would be good for it. but the best and cheapest is olive oil from my experience.

My friend had the massage done at the hospital by one of the nurses and they just used regular olive oil. She had a nine lb baby and she didn't even tear. It must really work! Good LUck

We used olive oil for perineal massages. We started massages like 35 weeks I think. It worked great on my perineum. My labia tore instead.

I am planning to do this I heard olive oil is great. I also heard that you should start around 30 weeks. I am terrified of tearing. I scared of that more than anything well other than a c-section.
