Your opinions on birthing classes...?
I am 25 1/2 weeks along with my first, and I haven't really thought about signing up for a birthing class. I was wondering what everyone's opinions on it are? Is it really worth it or can I go without taking one? My friend let me borrow a lamaze video that I am planning to watch towards the end. I just wanted to know what everyone's thoughts on this were. If you recommend taking one, please state why! Thanks!

I enjoyed my birthing classes but we did not do exactly what was taught to us but some of the stuff did help and it made my husband more comfortable because he understood what was going on. You do learn relaxation techniques and though I have never seen everyone do exactly what is taught in class most people do some version of what they have learned. It would not hurt you to take some form of a birthing class. There are many options out there. It is also a great bonding time for couples, family members or your significant other. If that is not for you watch the video and choose what works for you. In the end it is all about the delivery of the baby and making sure you are educated on what will be going on during and after the delivery. Good luck.

It really depends on the type of person you are. I went to one for 2 weeks. (2 sessions) I knew most of what they taught so I said why bother. I heard people never use the strategies they teach, and I forgot a lot strategies when I was in labor anyway. Of course you can go without taking one, but it could help you out. It helps some women and others it doesn't. I guess for a first baby it's good just to experience a class. You can always stop going if you don't feel it's right. I hope the best of luck! = ) Congrats btw.

I’ve also heard mixed reviews, but we’re taking one anyway. It’s six weeks, instead of four or one day. They all over the same amount of material, just the longer the duration, the shorter each class. I think that makes a difference in knowledge retention.
If nothing else, it will give us a chance to meet other expectant couples.

They are worth it because you get a chance to ask some questions, but truth be told, the only thing I remembered from my birthing class was this sentence: Rest between contractions.
Not like you have a choice, since you just collapse between them, but that helped me.
Oh also, I remembered to take myself to a nice place in my head during contractions with the help of my husband who was describing this place to me that we both love.

I never took any birthing classes. We thought about it, but then after talking to other people came to the conclusion that it wasn't necessary. Most people told me that they forgot what they were suppose to do when they went into labor anyways. The nurses there know what they are doing and they'll help you out.
