Monitor display becomes garbled and mouse freezes up?

I have an older computer with Windows XP. I'm using Trend Micro anti spyware. Often, the computer boots up with the display garbled and very low resolution, and the mouse pointer freezes up. It seems to have started since I reformatted my hard drive after getting a nasty virus.

Update:

Also, I took all the latest updates from Microsoft. When I shut down the computer to allow the updates to be activated, the computer never shut off on its own.

my suggestion is, update your computer to the most recent software update possible, then do a system restore so that you have only the vital programs needed. If that does not seem to work, check your monitor and mouse. It might be from just having an old mouse or monitor. If not, the reformatting of your hard drive might of gone wrong in some way. That's all the advice i have for you.
