Did the Republicans set up John McCain to be the fall guy for Bush's failures?
The theory is this. The GOP knew that they were doomed to lose this election after the failures of the Bush administration. They didn't want to waste one of their good candidates, so they allowed McCain to get the nomination. He's not really a Republican anyway, so this way they can hang the anchor around his neck for losing the election, and come back in 4 years with Mitt Romney and a re-organized party.
RED. Just answer the question not just throw back insults and change the subject. Who are you, Sarah Palin?
RBELLEVILLE Good answer. I'm not suggesting there was a conspiracy. I'm thinking somewhere along they way, they looked at it and realized WHOEVER wins, has a shitload of problems to sort out. Maybe they DON'T want to win that badly, and as you said, then they can blame the Democrats in 4 years, as people have short memories.
AZ I'm not saying I think Romney is a good candidate. Of course, he does have the magic underwear...

I think you nailed it! Picking Sarah Palin was a convenient choice also, as they can blame the religious right and back away from that baskets of nuts. In four years, we have a centered Republican party with strong candidates and what will likely still be a big mess to blame on the Democrats.

Interesting theory. It does work out for them. McCain will be to old to run again, and it will be time for a bright, shiny, and new Republican party.
I don't think they planned this, and I do think they really want to win, however you bring up how this works in their favor.
The best part is you will have a Democrat Pres & House who inherit two wars and a fail economy.
You can blame them for all that in 4 years.

Wow! i assume that there relatively ARE some actual Republicans left and that i salute you. i assume you're made up of extra perfect (tougher?) stuff than i'm as I burned my social gathering card for the time of the Bush a million years (after a three hour long very own verbal substitute with Barry Goldwater) and have been a staunch self reliant for the reason that.

The first part of your theory is spot on...any Republican candidate would have been facing doom and gloom because of Bush. Beyond that, I think you're deluded that Republicans had any "good " candidates. Romney was a clear loser...surely a bigger loser than McCain.

Possibly. I have heard suspicions that McCain basically and purposefully threw in the towel when he nominated Palin for his VP because he didn't want to clean up this crap.

No, that is not correct. He fought hard to get where he is now. When the dust settled, there he was, running for the presidency as a Republican. Unfortunately for McCain, he follows an unpopular president.

More like the Democrats set Bush up to blame for Clinton's mistakes.
