How can I have both dog and cat?
just moved into a new neighborhood. I want a dog and a cat. But don't know if I should have the dog before cat. I can't afford to have both at the same time. How old the cat should be introduced to the dog?

yes u can and it dsnt matter which u buy first... just introduce them slowy and dont force it, have the dog on a lead so your cat dsnt feel threatened. i also found it helps if u hav a room or cage in the house or yard where only the cat can get to kind of like a little safe house for ur kitty...
i have 2 dogs and 2 cats that get along perfect. first i got chico (dog), 5yrs later i got kiddy_vicious (kitten) and chico was so protective of him, seriously he'd chase flies away lol, then i got haner (kitten), again same thing at first he wasnt sure of chico but after a day or two wouldnt sleep anywhere else but next to him, its cute... then a few months ago i got tyson (puppy) and both cats love him... just beware ur dog WILL eat al the cat food so make sure u feed ur kitty in another room or put the bowl up on a table where onl ur kity can reach...
hope this helps
good luck

I dont' know about that first answer. I had an 8 yr old cat and introduced a pup to her. The pup was quite young (9 weeks) and they got along just fine.
I think as long as the dog doesn't have bad experiences with cats *neighbor hood types* it can be older than the kitten. Since Dogs kill Cats (mine do now) I would suggest a cat first and a pup later.
Just my thought on this.

Id get the dog first, because it would be easier to introduce a kitten to a dog and have them befriends. Then to introduce a puppy to a full grown cat and have them be friends. Will you be able to afford both at a later time?

id buy the puppy first because when its older it more likely to accept a kitten than i cat would be to accept a puppy..
although i dont think it matters all to much beacause i had a cat for about 2 years then got a puppy, at first the cat hated the puppy but now about 9 months on, they are getting on well and dont mind eachother anymore.
i think it jsut depends on the personality of your pets.
