Do Pancake Tortoises make good pets?

Apparently, they are about a foot round, and only about half an inch thick. Do they escape by crawling under fences etc?

Pancake tortoises are quite hard to come by in this country. Even more so if you want genuine UK captive bred. I suggest you do plenty of research on them. There are plenty of tortoise species available from breeders in this country such as russians, red foots, ibera's, hermans and spur thighed's. So its worth looking at these too and seeing if any appeals to you.

As pancakes are hard to come by they will be very expensive to buy, i daresay they probably reach the £300 mark and probably exceed it. I'm going to give you a few link to useful sites for research and consideration.

The first is the Tortoise Trust which has plenty of caresheets on plenty of species if tortoise.

The second is an excellent tortoise forum. Do a search on pancakes and you can view threads which should tell you plenty of info on their care and appropriate housing.

No. They are considered very difficult care animals. They protect themselves by crawling in rock cracks and jamming their shell against the rock.

well they are very expensive and can cost between £110 to £300 Just for the cage and turtle itself but apart from that they are great.

If you know how to look after them I guess...

You also need a certificate to own a turtle/tortoises.
