If i have my CDL's in one state and I move to another state, do I have to get my CDL's all over again?

I have my CDL in illinois, but i'm moving to Virginia...will i have to take the test all over , or will i just be able to transfer them?

When I switched CDL from Michigan to Indiana I had to take the written tests. First I had to take the operators license test to make sure I was "allowed" to hold their license and then the common knowledge and air brakes for the CDL. Not sure if all states do that or not tho. Didn't study or anything.

BUT... you will need to fill out a Supplemental Driver's Licensing History Sheet. http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/dl1pa.pdf

If you have hazmat the USA Patriot Act allows customers transferring a CDL with the hazmat endorsement from another state to transfer their valid HME background records check without the requirements for fingerprinting or showing proof of citizenship or immigration provided the background records check is verified by the state of issuance. http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/citizen/drivers...

If your CDL is unexpired you just transfer it at the dmv. There is a fee to get the new license from the new state, but you do not have to re-test.

This is how all the major trucking companies train drivers from misc. states. They license them locally and have them switch in their home state.

no. as long as u dont let it expire they can just change it over...im gonna get mine transferred this week...

if u have haz-mat though, u might have to take the test and pay for the background check and all that...u should check into it...
