Well I don't know about god, but the Dijinn (Genie) is a mythological creature from Arabic mythology.
The creature sucks your life force out of you. However, you are unaware of the process since you're living in a "dream world" as your real body is slowly dying as the Dijinn continues to suck your life force.
The "dream world" then became more commercialized and less dark, giving birth to the genies you see in Aladdin and I Dream of Jeannie.
