How To Measure Gauge Crochet Shells?

Gauge:

1 shell = 1 1/2 Inches.... is this measured horizontally or vertically?

and also,

1 shell = 1 1/2 Inches; 5 rows = 3 Inches

does the 5 rows = 3 inches mean 5 rows of just the shell rows or all the rows, b/c Rows 1 and 2 are sc and row 3 is beg shell and shell, and rows 4-20 are shell.

ugh I love crochet but the gauges are annoying......... I cant seem to get it!!! and I want these items to fit right....

thanks 4 your help!

Update:

LOL thanks Katherine...... I was almost sure that the rows were measured vertically, so then I was measuring the shells that way too....... I just dont get it why I cant meet the darned gauge!!!!! I mean I have tried every crochet hook I have and ... ugh.....

ha yeah that is a good point you have about putting it away for awhile, ( before it gets thrown across the room!!!) anyways I am guessing you are a crocheter?

thanks sooo much for answering!!!!!!!

lol I'm beginning to like you..a lot!

the pattern stitch (that's the shell) is measured horizontally.

Rows are vertically and usually indicate the pattern stitch, i.e., the shell stitch. 5 rows of shells should measure 3 inches (give or take a millimeter or two)

Keep working on projects. The more you crochet and take your time the better you will become. Above all don't get flustered, frustrated, or upset. Put your work away the moment you start feeling these anxieties.
