Is there some sort of etiquette dictating how to remove butter from the cube?

It seems logical to take it from one end, but my roommate likes to dig in from the top. I'm just trying to figure out if this is something he was trained to do, or if this is just something he does. I know it's poor manners to leave the butter knife embedded in the butter, but what about removing butter to butter toast or something like that? What is proper?

Update:

Really, what taking it from the middle means is that when the stick is almost out, we're left with a few odd lumps covered in bread crumbs. So I'm just curious what the rules regarding butter might be.

Get a .38 and next time he tries this little butter trick point it at him and inform him that the new rule is you take one (1) pat of butter from the end and then remove the knife. Or else.

One should always remove the portion that they are going to be using and always remove the butter knife after the use.

i didn't think it mattered..........i mean, if you want butter, how does it matter which end you take it from, or even from the middle.
