The Barf diet killed my dog so why do people still feed like this ?

The vet says lots of dogs have died when owners feed raw and bones my dog died because the bones damaged his bowel after lots of surgery to attempt to repair the damage he still died. My question is why do people who favour this method of feeding not warn people of the dangers? Please speak to your vet before you feed BARF

Update:

Bones and Raw Food diet - none was cooked it was RAW

I was a member of groups who fed this food I did so correctly my dog died the vet said many dogs who are fed bones die he went on to tell me to snap a chicken bone or lamb bone and feel the edges, yes they were meaty bones yes they were half a chicken raw, the fact is vets see many dogs injured by this method of feeding

People should be aware of the risks if this was a commercial type diet it would be banned

Update 2:

The fact that when you join a group for advice on BARF you are told all positive and that when done correctly there is little risk this is not true I was brain washed by the followers of BARF they are so similar to a cult and the risks are real vets have to do the repairs so they do know about the effects of BARF

Update 3:

Watch how the BARF feeders attack anyone who disagrees this is brain washing similar to a cult this cost my dog his life

Update 4:

There are more options available it is not as simple as kibble versus barf

What is wrong with removing the bones and cooking the food, my vet said if I had removed the bones and cooked the food that would have been far better and safer

Update 5:

How genetically similar are humans to other primates?

Update 6:

your presentations and brainwashing makes you a cult, you follow whatever you like but when you make others feel the only option if you want to feed a dog healthy is to feed barf is similar to how a cult works

Update 7:

My vet has never offered to sell me a bag of food ever

Update 8:

Bossoli I am sorry you feel offended but this has been an awful experience for me, I did the research, read the books, joined the groups and I do feel that people made me feel that this is the ONLY way to feed a dog if you want the dog to be healthy, you do not sound like you take this approach but many others do, they will not acknowledge other diets which are equally healthy and whats more they attempt to make you feel ignorant or a bad owner for not feeding barf

Update 9:

I was just like the others feeding barf I would defend my diet saying others were feeding commercial rubbish and that dogs should not have foods cooked I found evidence to show people I would quote wolf genetics

then my own dog died, my vet explained it all to me and the risks, I have researched more since this happened

it took my own much loved dog death to wake me up

I hope no other owner has to go through this

Update 10:

Thank you for saying we are 99% similar to chimps which is the same as dogs and wolves - how that 1% makes a difference

Update 11:

If you choose to feed barf then do so but please all I ask is that you tell others of all of the risks involved and that there are other methods of feeding an healthy diet it is not as simple as either feeding barf or commercial foods there are other options they are more time consuming more expensive but I would have done this for my dog if others had not told me it was wrong, how can something that killed my dog have been my only option.

Update 12:

please I do not want to offend you or argue I just do not want you or anyone to suffer like myself and my family

If you are aware of the risks then please ensure others are too

I moved away from commercial diets because I was not happy with them

wanted to make my own foods

was told that I could not cook or remove bones because this was wrong

do you agree cooking and removing bones is wrong or would you say that is acceptable

Update 13:

I never gave any cooked meat or bones

I know you cannot give cooked bones but can you give cooked meat

Update 14:

I did not want to turn this into an argument I just wondered why barf followers never warn of risks

I am hurting like mad at the moment because I lost my dog, the look on my vets face said it all when he said about snapping the chicken bone, I feel irresponsible for feeding this diet, I do not really blame anyone as it is my own stupid fault for listening and believing this was the only way to feed healthy

I do not want to say anything else because I do not want to cause any further offence but please warn of the risks and there are many but you will not find them reading and learning from only the people who agree with or follow barf there are two view points and I did not realise how controversial this diet was

Update 15:

Thank you for your help folks sorry Bindi if I came across offensive I got his aches back this morning and feel like well as a dog lover you know how I feel just wish I had feed him in a different way it may be rare I don't know the statistics on dog death from this type of injury but when it happens to your dog that is not important he was a great dog and I let him down, I have to live with that but need to continue to feed the others I honestly cannot continue with the barf now my boy died from feeding barf for one thing my kids and wife would hate me and whats more I would hate myself if it happened again I dislike commercial diets have to feed something one alternative is cooked meats but no bones any information regarding cooked diets would be appreciated

Update 16:

Artwork I am very real and this unfortionately did happen.

Now my boy is burried and I have had a little more time to grieve I am able to think straighter and would not want to prevent others from feeding what they feel is right for their dogs

To answer some of the questions my dog was a labrador

The dog began passing tar like stools and was taken to the vet straight away he did not show any other sign of being unwell, the vet operated and found severe damage to his bowels which he repaired the dog was hospitalised and he died several days later, It is hard for me to take it all in I have a report of his cause of death, where on the internet would be a good place to post it or would it be considered as inappropriate to post, I do not wish to email individuals however if you know of a suitable place to post the report I am happy to do so

I'm a cat owner and feed my cat raw and cooked meats and bones. Specifically the meaty bones are raw chicken wings and necks. She's so used to eating this that if she catches mice or birds she eats it, the whole bird is eaten except for a few feathers. I wonder if you problem was cooked bones or bones other than wing and neck? Cooked bones will splinter. I've also heard that animals who are not fed a predominantly meat diet don't have a sufficiently acid system to digest the bones, so if you were mixed feeding (commercial and meaty bone) this might be a problem?

But I'd think if a small cat can digest bone a dog can too. Commercial foods have not been around for long and in the wild cats and dogs both eat the whole prey animal.

I have to admit I got a bit lost with all the back and forth conversation. What I did want to say is I chose a raw diet that fits my needs. I feed chicken leg quarters for dinner and natures variety or some other pre mix that is ground already. I needed something more simple for my husband and anyone who keeps the dogs. Also with the young one I make her work for her breakfast for training and the patties can be broken. We had to put our older one to sleep last weekend but the diet prolonged his life as far as we can tell he had dm and it seemed to slow the progression.

Anyway my stance it that raw is best but like bindie said not for everyone. What I really wanted to say is I read quite a few books and many websites and articles most of them did warn of the dangers, not with a bright neon sign but they did say they could not guarantee that no problems would occur what they did say is that the rates were not any higher than the dogs that choked on Commercial dog food. I have been very aware of the potential of choking of puncturing since I started and I felt the benefits out weighed the risks.

I did also want to agree with you that some raw feeders are over the top so I see where you get the cult reference from. I nearly got my head taken off when I said I used some premixed stuff for convience in one group. You really have to find the right people, for example if you still believe that a dog would do best on raw diets you can always go with pre-mixes with ground bone or grind them yourself. It is not about doing it one way there are many acceptaple ways to do the raw diet you just have to research and ask tons of questions at least that is what i did until I found some not so finatical people who thought I was going to kill my dog if I gave it some ground buffalo with no bone until I could get to the store

    Barf Diet

There is one good thing about the sudden popularity of the BARF diet.

It is bringing attention to the serious lack of quality dog foods on the market.

Many dogs are slowly being killed by cheap, inappropriate dog foods filled with chemicals, useless fillers, and animal byproducts that should be thrown in the trash. Do you know what your dog’s food label means when it says chicken byproduct? You may think it means your dog is getting chicken meat from the food, but the label is actually referring to the parts of the chicken no one else wants, such as the head, legs, beak, etc.

Don’t go to the extremes of the BARF diet, but don’t fall for the misleading marketing of commercial dog foods. Just because a company says their dog food is healthy, doesn’t mean it is.

There are some products that doesn't include any BARFs. Of course, such foods are fully safe to your dogs, too >>>http://www.agritura.com/index.php/cat/c380_Dog-Foo...

Maybe because 99% of people who feed BARF do so successfully. There are risks in everything we feed. Salmonella has been found in kibble and there have been recalls.

I too have lost a dog to a blockage, he ate wheat from the field.

I ve fed BARF for 5 years with no problems.mi also run a raw feeding group on Facebook.

A dog needs to build up its stomach acids to digest whole bones. If you don t want to feed whole bones, you just feed mince with ground bone.

The majority of vets are not aware of the benefits of raw feeding, as they have not researched it.

If you want to eat truly healthy, lose body fat consistently, normalize your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, prevent cancer, and even boost your brain health and energy levels, you may have heard all over the news that the Paleo Diet has been found to be one of the best methods of achieving all of these benefits compared to any other popular "fad" diets out there. Go here https://tinyurl.im/aHM7t

The truth is that the Paleo Diet will never be considered a fad because it's just simply the way that humans evolved to eat over approximately 2 million years. And eating in a similar fashion to our ancestors has been proven time and time again to offer amazing health benefits, including prevention of most diseases of civilization such as cancer, heart disease, alzheimers, and other chronic conditions that are mostly caused by poor diet and lifestyle. One of the biggest misunderstandings about the Paleo Diet is that it's a meat-eating diet, or a super low-carb diet. This is not true

Believe in your vet and expect your dog to die of heart disease, cancer and or discrepancy. Same with following the advice of a medical doctor for yourself.

Go Ketogenic Paleo for yourself and your pet and see the end of expensive vet and medical costs.

Education is a must. Chicken feet and necks, fish bones provide safe bones for your pet. Organ meat (don’t overload), meat and especially fat from bovine and pink salmon should be human grade and clean. Some virgin coconut oil is good and pork fat is well taken. Freeze and store and take out small quantities for a few days feeing. Do as much raw as possible. If your dog gets the runs from raw heart, liver or other organs, lightly steam before feeding.

The number of dogs dying from processed kibble is vast; the number from properly fed BARF, minuscule, but that is where the ‘news’ (falsified) is made. Remember, your doctor and vet do not get trips to Florida from healthy patients. They make their money from keeping people coming and that is the system we have. Step away from that door.

How much bone were you feeding? With a raw diet, the usual recommendation is 80% meat, 10% bone, and 10% organ.

I do feed my dog raw, but I do not bash others that don't. If they have their minds made up on raw, I try to point them in the right direction to find a high quality dry food.

I am so sorry for your loss.
