Is a big garden easy to manage?
Basically I want to know how to make it look good with as little maintenance as possible, someone mentioned that I should get together a plan of what I want it to look like and divide it up into easy to manage segments. I have an absolutely vast back garden which is about half the size of a football pitch and my two front gardens probably make up the same.
It's a lot of hard work to try and keep on top of cutting the hedge and mowing the lawn and I want something that is very simple, looks good, and somewhere I can relax in the summer. Is there any sort of perennial flowers I can use that need little if any maintenance? someone mentioned I should just plant rose bushes as it's simply a case of cutting them back and weding out around them every once in a while. ANY other hints/tips/ideas are GREATLY welcomed.
Thanks for your help.

I have a large garden and I design gardens. I say to people don't worry about getting things perfect, and park like, it is impossible unless you have a gardener or three (25 acres needs up to 10 gardeners).
Perennials usually involve at least annual maintenance and grass is heavy maintenance. If you are going to stay for many years, get a garden designer to design you a garden and then gradually build it as time and money allows.
Large gardens with lower maintenance usually involve plenty of trees, shrubs and under plantings of ground cover. Layer your shrubs into say three layers higher at the back then medium and then low. its also a great idea to divide the area into garden rooms, so you don't see all of the garden at once. make people want to see whats around the next bend. As the garden is so large you can also have features such as mini forest of trees such as birch. Under planted with nice ground covers you can use up large areas of land and no pruning or mowing necessary.
My garden is never 'manicured', I just do my best and most people don't notice to much wrong. Don't make it a trial or you won't enjoy it. I always wanted to live in a park and even though it's far from perfect, I love my lifestyle.

I got rid of the lawn and planted shrubs. Whoever told you roses were easy is either nuts or was thinking of rugosa roses like you see growing around car parks. Any other kind has to have the ground around kept clear or else you get millions of weeds
Try any cottage garden plant. Here are a few that are little or no maintenence
foxgloves
hardy geranium
alchemilla mollis
paeonies
hemerocallis (day lilies)
persicaria
also bamboo is good. Email me direct I will help. If you are in the South West I will come and look. My garden is that size, I consider it too small but then I grow veg too

Shrubs are low maintenance and planting bulbs and plants that come back every year are a good idea. Don't get rid of grass though. For inspiration there are loads of internet sites you can visit. Also go to a good garden centre and ask advice from them. Usually a couple of hours a week will help you keep the garden in order and stop it getting out of control.

There are a variety of beautiful ferns and perennials that you can use to create a low maintenance garden. Athyrium is a lovely, light fern, along with Adiantum. Brown-eyed Susans (daisy), Day Lily and a variety of grasses can create an elegant look also. Some beautiful vines include Wisteria and Crimson Glory Vine (Vitis), just to name a few. If you decide to plant roses, they will sit nicely among any of these. To keep weeds low, select a nice, delicate ground cover which you can "shape to fit" your flower/grasses selections. Have a great day!

Put dwarf trees and shrubs around the edges so they don't grow to big and you don't have to worry about pruning, you can just leave them as is. make sure you get a mix of evergreens, and then bushes and shrubs that have nice bright colors in fall and in the spring so each season you always have something nice to look at. Go to HomeDepot on a non-busy day and ask them to help you pick out the plants. We have 3/4 of an acre back yard and all we do is mow, everything looks great.

i have a big garden and to let you get a feel for how big it is think of one football pitch for my front garden and one for the back and you'll get a rough idea.
it isn't hard to maintain but has to be mown at least once every to weeks and weed once a week. which sounds quite easy but it takes three of us to keep it at bay. mind you the result is worth it.
for the best effect i would say to mainly plant flowers that bloom yearly as it means you don't have to replace them constantly, so roses are your best option.
hope this helped

WOW! You got some lengthy repsonses, virtual novels.
I could go on forever too, I suppose. But I will keep my advice sweet and simple. In every flower garden use Preen in the spring. It stops all emerging seeds (so don't use it if you are planting flowers from seed because it will kill those too).
Most people buy their annuals and perennials already started, so Preen is safe to use. It will save endless hours of weeding and make your garden a joy rather than a chore.
