This mideval rhyme refers to the practice of distributing offices, prebends and other government jobs on Christmas day. The good jobs were the "plums". The offices were supposedly given on merit (thus "good boy") but of course it was mostly simony. The story goes that the documents were baked in pies...but somehow I don't believe that part.

There is no record of what little Jack was sitting on.
