What do I need to know about painting a bedroom?

I want to paint my son's bedroom, but I have never done this before. I'm not going for any fancy effects, just a new color. What kind of paint should I buy to stay nice and clean in a kid's room? And what supplies do I need to make sure I do a nice clean job? Also, how do I calculate how much paint I need?

For a really nice finish use a primer first. That will decrease the amount of paint you need too. A gallon usually will do unless the room is really big or needs 2 coats. You need a ladder, dropcloths, paint pan, roller, and brushes. Go with good brushes so the bristles don't fall out and stick to the paint. Use tape to tape off the edges and baseboards. Much faster and will save you headaches. You can get a corner brush which will make those tricky sections easier.

You can go cheap on all the supplies except roller and brushes. Not paint, the supplies. You don't want the cheapest for painting the actual paint because it makes a huge difference in how the walls look afterwards.

If you have any little cracks or little holes, use spackling to cover those up. That's fairly cheap, just smooth it so it's even. Basically you might want to spend one day prepping unless you have help or lots of energy! lol

Wash the walls first and dry them with a cloth. Then do all the trim and corners first. Use the roller to do the mid-sections and paint in a "W" shape then go back and paint all over it. That will give the best coverage.

It's not hard, just time consuming. The more you do it, the faster you will get. You might want to get a bottle of paint cleaner to wipe up any spills or mistakes. That isn't necessary but saves you time as well. Store brushes and rollers in a plastic bag if you don't finish in one day. Use up all the paint in the pan and wash that out though, each time you paint.

You don't want Flat paint! Doesn't wash well at all. Eggshell finish is the norm for most people. You need the blue painters tape to tape off everything, door frame, windows etc. A brush for the trim and corners, a drop cloth and a damp sponge for any drips. Unless the room is extremely large you should be able to get 2 coats from 1 gallon of paint.
