First of all, a bird does not have to have another bird to keep him from getting lonely. This is a misconception that many people have. A bird is just fine all by itself. Most of the time if there are 2 birds, they will bond to each other and not want much to do with the owner. I recommend just getting one bird. Make sure you have a cage large enough and have enough toys to keep it entertained. It will be fine while you are not home. You can leave a radio on for it when you go somewhere, that's all it really needs. Please read my profile..

you should get 2 they are social birds and they do get lonely when they are alone. Apart from the cost of a second bird you wont have to worry about any extra expenses since they are very easy to maintain. Also with two birds you will get more singing as they will communicate with each other and you

definatly consider getting two. Two males do well together, females will usually fight. I have three males in the same cage. They love it. Always talking, chirping, and clicking. It's so cute to watch them interact. They bob their heads up and down to eachother, and sometime's if they like eachother, they will groom eachother too. It's adorable. And considering you go to school and stuff, two would be your best bet. Here is a site on how to sex budgies if you do buy two. http://www.budgieplace.com/mf.html
Best of Luck! =)

If you are wanting a bird to bond to you I would just get one and have plenty of toys for it to play with while you are gone. If you get 2 they will bond to each other and won't need you, It can happen if you play with 2 enough they will still bond to you as well as each other.
