    The gospels say "at the ninth hour." By the conventions of the day, the ninth hour would be mid-afternoon; halfway between noon (the sixth hour) and sunset. So 3:00 pm is a reasonable guess, but of course it might have been 2:30, 3:35 or anything in that area.
