helping greyhound with edema?
Post-laceration repair, Lucy has developed edema from her toes to halfway up her upper leg (hind). The bandage was ditched ~6 hrs after it was put on, and she's been wearing a medi-boot when necessary, and naked otherwise.
Luckily she's a fabulous patient, and I've been able to elevate her leg for the majority of the day. I've also tried brushing the leg to help move the fluid. Unfortunatly, it doesn't seem to be making much of a difference - in fact, the affected tissue looks fairly bruised.
Is anyone aware of any other treatment methods? I thought about heat-packing to help circulation, but it is fairly warm... cooling to reduce swelling? lol - anyone?

how extensive is the swelling? is it painful? how long ago was the injury and treatment? could be cellulitis rather than edema- esp since the bandage is off, and with the history of laceration. is she currently on any antibiotics? (she may/may not need them).
if the whole area is bruised- could just be swollen from the tissue healing from the trauma. the swelling may have been expected. greyhound skin is so sensitive!
cold therapy should help to reduce inflammation- heat would exacerbate the inflammation.
if she becomes painful, numb, or stops eating, check with your vet. the swelling should not get worse after about day 3-4, and should begin improving shortly thereafter.
good luck with her. she sounds like a very sweet dog ;)
