Are the X-files movies stand alone?

Okay the x file tv series has what I call the main story episodes and filler episodes. The first x files movie kinda went along with the main story, so although you may not need the series necessarily you would get more out of it if you knew what was going on in the series. The second one is like a filler episode, it can stand alone because the basic concept is not linked to the main story. I would like to say I enjoyed the last one better....I think the first movie was a little off......I would highly recommend the series over both movies...it truly is a remarkable show

Yes, the series is worth watching, the plot is not hard to understand so I don't think you will get lost. knowing the character's backgrounds does help beside that its a great series to watch. I wish they would continue for another 3 seasons.
