What do I need to do to verify that an "accountant" is a genuine licenced accountant?
Ok so I own a business in a small town. We had this guy come in and say he can do our taxes and bookwork etc. Which is great cause I'm looking for a new accountant. He says that he is just starting up so he does not have an ABN yet. His card has a mobile (cell) number and no land line and his email address is with hotmail.
He seems like a real genuine guy and seems to know what he's talking about. But how do I know if he is legit?
Thats why I'm asking the question. I have no idea what to ask for!!

My first rule in business is don't do anything without a good CPA and lawyer in your confidence. I'm sure he sounds like a good guy and is obviously a good sales person. However, he's not certified, has no permanent office, no website or domain name, no staff and no track record or references that can be verified. Why on earth would you take such a risk? It's just not worth it and when you have a problem down the road you'll be kicking yourself saying "I knew it!". Trust your gut that is telling you something doesn't seem right.
