How hot should my computer be?

A few days ago my laptop overheated (streaming video on a 2nd screen) and hit the fail safe temp and shut down. :-( I since downloaded a program to watch the temperature and bought a cooling fan. problem being i don't know what temperature the my laptop should be at since it varies between different computers.

Its an HP pavilion dv8040us with an AMD Turion64 ML-40.

My idle temp (core) has been between 55-62ºC and under full load just under 80ºC. This sounds really hot to me but I know nothing and it seemsto always be in those ranges.

Update:

are these idle temps or full load? also ive read the 50-60º before but it seemed like temps for intel in a desktop with giant heat sinks and fans compared to my AMD driven laptop

Update 2:

also i can hear my fan running and tried to clean the heat sink with a can of compressed air but it didnt seem to help

For each component, Motherboard 55 C, Graphics Card 65 C, CPU 70 C, everything else has a fail safe of about just under 80. When these go above these temperatures, any of them, they will start to fail, or the PC will crash, OR you will damage some things. You might need a static free duster, or some new fans.

  • it shouldnt be hot
