Graduate scholarships still taking applications?
Are there any scholarships open for application for a white male entering their first year for a M.Sc. in mechanical engineering?
There are a bunch of really good government STEM scholarships/fellowships out there but it seems they all had applications due last fall, which was way before i knew i was going to grad school.
I already looked here so dont suggest these: http://www.asee.org/fellowship-programs/graduate

2004 passat wont start when hot its outside?
I dont get it, the weather recently got over 90+ and my car wont start in the middle of the day but it starts up fine in the morning and late in the evening.
The car does nothing, doesn't even try to turn over. Its seems to me its something electrical because the dash lights come on in the on position but nothing happens when you turn it over.
I'm open to ideas. I read on a couple other VW forums that the older ones had bad ignition switches that would do this, but i havent read anything about an 04 (or other b5.5 for that matter). Also the car only has 60k miles on it.
1 AnswerMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoAmortize a capital project?
OK, its been a long time since I have done this. I figured out my project cash flow and my annual depreciation. How do I show the depreciation in my cash flow? Do I simply add the depreciation as a revenue? Or are there other steps I need to do/ other way to do this?
Thanks so much.
FYI Its a very preliminary proposal so it doesn't need to be spot on.
1 AnswerOther - Business & Finance1 decade agoWhat did I do to my foot?
I was running and caught some uneven ground and fell. My foot hurt really bad, really bad and almost went to the hospital (which is something I dont do). I wasn't able to walk on it for about 36 hours and was reduced to hopping on one foot around my apartment. Its now been 3 or 4 days and I can walk again with only slight discomfort/limp.
I was originally convinced I broke my foot but it wasnt really swollen and its gotten better too fast for that. The pain was localized to the top of my foot above the two smaller metatarsals, aside from when I put any weight on it which was a pretty crippling pain.
So its not broken, is it possible to sprain the top-middle-right side of my foot?
2 AnswersInjuries1 decade agoHow do I mail something to Canada?
I know this sounds ignorant, or at least odd. But, I need to mail a standard envelope to British Columbia in the morning and I just want to make sure a normal US stamp will do. And that i don't need some strange Canadian postage or a second stamp or something since USPS wont be handling it in entirety. THANKS!
6 AnswersOther - Canada1 decade agoAcceptable GRE scores for a midrange masters program?
So I took the gre today and did pretty mediocre and I know my scores are below average but are they bad enough to justify paying the $180 to retake it. I got a 690 quant and 440 verbal. I am 3.1 student (3.9 major) and have research experience.
I wanted to go to one of these schools for a masters in mechanical engineering.
University of Cincinnati
Northeastern university
Vanderbilt university
University of British Columbia
Also, does anyone know the average scores for these schools, I can't find UBCs anywhere.

1 AnswerStandards & Testing1 decade agohow to use excel's AND function in array formula?
I have this formula which goes through a lengthy list (F$13:F$5659) and gives me the largest number of concurrent cells that are greater than some number(>=$A$2). That seems to work fine for me however, I need to take this formula and add a second condition i.e. the cell must be a number. Notice that it is an array formula.
Works: {=LARGE(FREQUENCY(IF(F$13:F$5659>=$A$2,ROW(F$13:F$5659)),IF(F$13:F$5659<$A$2,ROW(F$13:F$5659))),$C2)}
Doesn’t Work: {=LARGE(FREQUENCY(IF(AND(F$13:F$5659>=$A$2,ISNUMBER(F$13:F$5659)),ROW(F$13:F$5659)),IF(F$13:F$5659<$A$2,ROW(F$13:F$5659))),$C2)}
Also Doesn’t Work: {=LARGE(FREQUENCY(IF(ISNUMBER(F$13:F$5659),IF(F$13:F$5659>$A$2,ROW(F$13:F$5659))),IF(F$13:F$5659<$A$2,ROW(F$13:F$5659))),$C2)}
I think it is because the output of AND is true or false where I need it to be an array. I can seem to get around this data type mismatch. Do I need to be changing the bins on my frequency formula? I think I’ve reached the limitations of my ability in excel and have just lost my patience for the day, please help.
Similar issue with this formula, I can’t get the isnumber to behave like I want it to.
Works: {=COUNTIF(F$13:F$5659,">=1500")}
Fails: {=COUNTIF(F$13:F$5659,AND(IF(">2100",TRUE,FALSE),ISNUMBER(F$13:F$5659)))}
Fails: {=IF(ISNUMBER(F$13:F$5659),COUNTIF(F$13:F$5659,">2100"))}
2 AnswersProgramming & Design1 decade agoGood vacation websites?
I'm looking for a decent website to research vacation ideas. All sites kind of seem the same to me and overwhelmingly full if junk. I guess I'm looking for actual reviews, trip ideas (not scam packages) , and it maybe if they offer legitimate last minute deals. Multiple sites are ok but don't just list the obvious ones (like travelocity) to get your answer point. Thanks in advance!
1 AnswerOther - Destinations1 decade agoExcel VBA screen updating?
I have a fairly lengthy and complex VBA code (at least to me it is) with several subroutines accessing an outside server which then do a variety of calculations resulting in a scatter plot of around 2000 points.
When in the sheet there is often a lag time causing the sheet to respond slowly when you scroll into view of the plot. My question is will the line "Application.ScreenUpdating = False" help this? I know it is traditionally used for inside of macros and then later turned back to true.
So if i leave this set as false will it reduce latency? And can I use lines such as ActiveSheet.Calculate to update the plot only when necessary, or is there a chance the plot wont refresh when called to?
Thank you!!!
1 AnswerProgramming & Design1 decade agoWindows 7 won't let me increase the screen resolution.?
Bought a new computer today with an nvidia 9100, reusing my old monitor. The monitor has a 1920x1080 resolution, using a VGA cord. Everything worked fine on my xp machine, same cord and all. Windows 7 doesn't provide a higher resolution option for a generic monitor than 1600x1200. I also tried using the NVidia control panel to over ride it but it attempts to change then just leaves it at 1600x1200.
The driver is the most recent one from the nvidia website, when windows tries to "find an update" it "updates" to a year old driver which doesn't even work.
How do i change the resolution to 1920x1080? specifically please?

I realize this is a loaded question and more dependent on the owner of the vehicle than anything but i was looking at buying a 2000, 6-cylinder, 4wd, cherokee sport with 110k on it and wondered where it was in its life cycle? Anyone care to share their experiences and or common problems with them?

1 AnswerMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoHow to do a linear regression?
I need to do a regression model for a data set but i need to force the y-intercept to be zero. When i try to solve my equations fall back to an identity. If it makes a difference its a normalized regression where x'=x^2.
more specifically if y=ax^2 find a. im trying to solve by transforming x squared to x then solving y=a1*x+a0. then transform back. but where i keep running into difficulty is letting the a0=0 and still having something to work with. THANKS FOR ANY HELP.

2 AnswersOther - United States1 decade ago2001 eclipse car audio problem?
I have a 01 eclipse. it has the original infinity amp and speakers. i also have subs, but besides the point. My head unit is a pioneer 7800. The head unit was wired in with the Mitah wiring harness using rca's.
One day im listening to a cd and suddenly the sound quality becomes terrible. lots of static and popping noises and at low volume no noise at all but at certain volumes there would be reasonable definition (still bad though) but at a reduced volume. I removed the head unit and reinstalled the factory one. no problems for about two weeks. now I'm getting similar static and popping noises but not nearly as bad as before and they only happen maybe once a day and barely noticeable.
Whats wrong?
my original guess was i blew the factory amp with the higher voltage pre-outs on my aftermarket head unit but it works fine most of the time with the OEM head unit. does anyone have an explanation for this, if they feel its the amp? or any other ideas that would explain the intermittent problems with OEM head unit and terrible problems with aftermarket?
also, im not an idiot, it is wired correctly, and have had the head unit in my car for over 4 years.
THANKS!

Now when I go to check the box to "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor" it refreshes the screen and simply un checks the box. What did i do? and how do i fix this? I usually use a DVI cable, however i also tried an s-video cable and it still does not work. THANKS.
3 AnswersMonitors1 decade agoHow hot should my computer be?
A few days ago my laptop overheated (streaming video on a 2nd screen) and hit the fail safe temp and shut down. :-( I since downloaded a program to watch the temperature and bought a cooling fan. problem being i don't know what temperature the my laptop should be at since it varies between different computers.
Its an HP pavilion dv8040us with an AMD Turion64 ML-40.
My idle temp (core) has been between 55-62ºC and under full load just under 80ºC. This sounds really hot to me but I know nothing and it seemsto always be in those ranges.
3 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agopike fishing in ohio?
I used to go on pike fishing trips to the Georgian Bay but cant afford it anymore. I was wondering if anyone knew anywhere in Ohio with good pike fishing. In either the Cleveland, Cincinnati, or Mount Vernon areas. I've heard of several lakes that have pike but have never talked to anyone whose caught one there. I guess I'm looking for pike fishing not a lake with a single northern in it.
I'd also be interested in a pike fishing spot that would be a good weekend camping trip within a couple hours drive. THANKS.
