Average GRE scores and am I close enough?

So I took the gre today and did pretty mediocre and I know my scores are below average but are they bad enough to justify paying the $180 to retake it. I got a 690 quant and 440 verbal. I am 3.1 student (3.9 major) and have research experience.

I wanted to go to one of these schools for a masters in mechanical engineering.

University of Cincinnati

Northeastern university

Vanderbilt university

University of British Columbia

Also, does anyone know the average scores for these schools, I can't find UBCs anywhere.

You scored an 1130. Basically that is not bad. The average is 1000, I'd say anything below 1000 is a fail. I am a psychology major looking into clinical psych (harder to get into than med school) which asks for a 1200 minimum (verbal+quantitative). I/O psych requires anywhere from a 1100 or higher. But these are Ph.D. programs.

The best thing you can do is find the schools and they usually have minimum or avg gre scores on their pages. This came from the University of Cincinnati Mechanical Engineering page

    Q. What is the minimum GRE score?

    A. We do not have a minimum GRE score requirement, however most students admitted have a score of 720 or higher in Quantitative Assessment and 550 or higher in Verbal Assessment.

A piece of advice. A good GRE score can make up for a poor GPA (3.4 or lower). It's up to you to either retake the GRE or take the risk. They will also take your awesome major GPA into account. But I don't know how much.

Call the school and explain your situation. It's okay to ask questions like that.
