reporting benefit fraud???

I know someone that has openly admitted he shouldn't be getting disability benefits. He is 100% fit and well. If I report it will the people at the benefit department be able to trace my call and know who I am? I feel awful reporting someone but as a genuine claimant I feel it is a discrace that he is falsly claming money he is not entitled too. Basically want to know if reporting this person will affect my claim? Will they then look into my claim? Although I am genuine I don't want to be followed round and treated as a criminal just because I have reported someone else. Anyone been in this situation?

Can I just reiterate I am not guessing here, I have had a confession that he is commiting fraud.

I support pureplea. The bankers have ripped us off for billions of pounds and you want to report a bloke for "benefit fraud" Politicians set their own pay and pension levels while the rest of us who HAVE PAID INTO A PENSION may lose the lot and the government will do nothing. Get real will you. Its the same as the politicians telling me "do not leave your TV on standby" because of global warming. while they live in huge houses and have two or thre houses each. im not against them being better off than me, but dont let them preach to me and you. Get on with your life. When they make it the same for everyone then you can start your grassing up. I do not condone Benefit Fraud im just saying why pick on the "little guy". ??? There are many wealthy people who can afford an accountant to carry out fraud but thats called "legalised fraud".

Its an awful position but you have to do the right thing, we all work hard and would love extra help but lying about it isn't the right thing to do.

On the other hand there is some fault with the benefits office, they are obviously not researching the claims. There is a confidential helpline.

oh and as for 'pure pleasure''s comment if they think its fine for innocent tax payers to be supporting those who don't need it then thats their problem, I know I would prefer the money to go to people who really need it.

In the UK you report it to the DWP, their website is http://www.dwp.gov.uk/campaigns/benefit-thieves/ and their number is 0800 854 440. If your disability means you need to use a textphone the number is 0800 328 0512. Both are free and confidential. You could also use Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. If in the US, report it to your local police or the benefits office. Your state or federal agency paying the benefit probably has a phone Number to report this to and it can often be anonymous. Try googling benefit fraud and your state. I doubt if they will review your benefits because you reported someone. It will make them think you are responsible. Criminals rarely drop other crims in it without a reward. Don't feel bad about reporting him, he is ripping off every taxpayer and every person who needs benefits because every dollar or pound he gets from his fraud has to come off genuine claimants benefits or be raised from taxes and social security.

Ring up the number from a phone box if you are worried about call tracing.

Also, just wanted to tell you to ignore anyone calling you a grass.

People who call someone a "Grass" are endorsing, and probably engaging in, criminal behavior and should in no way be listened to or respected.

You can report such matters on line or on the special hotline -- and they are said to be confidential. As long as nobody requires you to make and sign a statement there seems to be no way in which the person would be able to find out that you were the source. I wouldn't for a moment expect this to affect your own claim. http://www.dwp.gov.uk/campaigns/benefit-thieves/

If you are unsure you could always use a public telephone, these people are parasites and need to be stopped, you are doing the right thing!

The people calling you a grass are not just delusional but probably engaging in illegal activities themselves and probably never done a hard days work in their lives, you could even report them for being abusive and not actually answering the question.

Edit @ purepleasureuk: only scrounging scum call it that, the rest of us call it doing the right thing.

All calls regarding benefit fraud are anonymous. This person is stealing from every tax payer/

Purepleasure - a grass is someone who stitches up their friends or 'crew', not someone who stops someone stealing!

Benifit fraud is stealing, and they are stealing from YOU! it's not grassing up and Karma will not come and get you. a broken country, and no money in the pot is what we are all heading for if people steal from us. Get a grip and phone the DSS people, remember you may need that money and if theives are taking it out of the system, you wont get any - thats Karma!

Report him. He's a thief and a fraudster.

They have confidential hotlines where you don't have to give your details just the name of the person and they investigate further.

    You're doing the right thing.
