Traveling abroad while changing status?

A friend of mine is currently working in the U.S. under her OPT (Optional Practical Training), which expires Dec. 31. She just recently married a U.S. citizen and is getting ready to file for permanent residency.

She lives in a border town and crosses to Mexico very often, almost every weekend, with her OPT card and her F1 visa.

She is sending her application next week, but she would like to travel to Mexico the weekend of Nov. 7.

Can she still travel abroad with her F1 visa after sending her permanent residency application?

She must have the F1 visa stamped on her passport

Then you can re-enter the U.S. using an expired F-1 visa stamp if you meet the following criteria:

    valid F-1 status

You have a valid passport (for at least 6 months beyond day of re-entry to U.S.)

You have an I-94 marked "Admitted F-1 until D/S"

You have a recent travel signature (within 5 months) on the 3rd page of your I-20. Please note, the Canadian government prefers to see a more recent travel signature (within 2 months) before they issue a Canadian tourist visa stamp.

You have an expired U.S. visa stamp in your passport. It cannot be stamped "canceled." If you applied for a new visa and it has not been issued or has been denied, you will not be able to re-enter the U.S. on your expired visa.

You are NOT from one of the following countries: Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, or Syria.
