Cheap, safe place to stay in New Orleans?
I'm moving from Arizona to Florida and plan to stop in New Orleans for a night.
I'm a young female, trying to penny pinch! I'm looking for a hotel in a safe area that's not too expensive? I don't know what parts of New Orleans to avoid, that would be helpful!
Thanks!
come on guys, serious answers please? thanks

If you want to stay near the French Quarter, you really won't find anything "cheap". If all you want is a place to stay, then try out near the airport (on the outskirts of New Orleans, in a town called Kenner).

Click the "enter your travel dates here" link, choose your dates, then submit the form. When the results appear, choose the airport (Louis Armstrong Int'l) and it'll re-sort itself, putting closest places first.
I'd suggest the Fairfield Inn (stayed there personally just last weekend, nice & clean & safe & right off of interstate).
Hope that helps! Sorry the other answers haven't been of much use. New Orleans has problems and un-safe areas -- just like every other big city in the world. But, most folks are friendly and nice...

My husband and I go to New Orleans almost twice a month every month and we have stayed at almost all of the hotels. I strongly recommend Holiday inn express on Carodeleet st. It is very nice I prefer this one over any other. I also bring my two young children sometimes. The rate is about 71- 85 a night depending on the season. The street also turns into Bourbon about 1 block down. The only other hotel I would recommend would be Park Saint Charles. It is on St. Charles Ave., and it is about 4 blocks from Canal. It runs from 59-79 a night there is also a trolley that runs in front of the hotel. Good luck and I hope you have fun.

I don't know what you call cheap, but if you want safe, don't go too cheap. They cannot coexist!
My daughter and her husband just went to stay at the Marriot and they loved it. Clean, big rooms, good service, walking distance to everything in the Quarter and about 119 a night.
They already stayed at the Hilton on the River. Great place, but not as cheap, more like $250 a night.
