Is everyone really entitled to their opinion?

In light of the new research, what do you think?

CHICAGO—In a surprising refutation of the conventional wisdom on opinion entitlement, a study conducted by the University of Chicago's School for Behavioral Science concluded that more than one-third of the U.S. population is neither entitled nor qualified to have opinions.

"On topics from evolution to the environment to gay marriage to immigration reform, we found that many of the opinions expressed were so off-base and ill-informed that they actually hurt society by being voiced," said chief researcher Professor Mark Fultz, who based the findings on hundreds of telephone, office, and dinner-party conversations compiled over a three-year period. "While people have long asserted that it takes all kinds, our research shows that American society currently has a drastic oversupply of the kinds who don't have any good or worthwhile thoughts whatsoever. We could actually do just fine without them."

Mark Fultz is a danger to the first amendment and his opinion is so off base it actually hurts society by being voiced.

That being said, I will fight for his right to voice it.

Who died and made him, or ANY group God to decide what opinions 'hurt by being voiced'?

The very concept of censoring ideas hurts society.

Wouldn't you like to have a magic phrase that would stop arguments, eliminate ill feeling, create good will, and make the other person listen attentively?

Yes? All right. Here it is: "I don't blame you one iota for feeling as you do. If I were you I would undoubtedly feel just as you do."

An answer like that will soften the most cantankerous old cuss alive. And you can say that and bee 100 percent sincere, because if you were the other person you, of course, would feel just as he does. Take Al Capone, for example. Suppose you had inherited the same body and the same temperament and mind that Al Capone had. Suppose you had had his environment and experiences. You would then be precisely what he was-and where he was. For it is those things-and only those things-that made him what he was. The only reason, for example, that you are not a rattlesnake is that your mother and father weren't rattlesnakes.

SPARHAWK: perhaps so... but still i like to see that impression confirmed!

good example : we just had an election in canada, as you may know. here in quebec, cultural differences always are a big subject, come voting time. very hot topic, i should know, being french myself.

especially this year, because the federal government cancelled large subention programs to french quebec artists. it was all over the news, well-known and beloved artists organized rallyes and concerts and spoke on tv and radio and the question was debated on every media "ad nauseam".

so about 2 weeks before election day, a reporter from montreal asked a regular guy (small town, sipping coffee at a terrace), if he believed that culture was important. the guy answered: of course, it's important to help farmers. i don't know about english, but in french "culture" may be a synonym of "agriculture"...

so that made some waves in the press. reporters rightly suggested that people were not even aware of THE subject of the day. that it was a shame that, in the age of instant information, people were so ignorant.

they had to stop, people were taking offence. apparently "joe blow" is proud of his ignorance.

so i would like more studies and experts to show "joe blow" that maybe he should not go straight to the sports page, at least once in a while.

some people ought to easily stay quiet. critiques are entitled whilst the guy is conscious what they're conversing approximately or has a history on the problem handy. i won't be able to stand people who've an opinion on each and every thing yet haven't any concept what something ability. lack of information is so tense. yet thats in simple terms my opinion :)

So much for Chicago's School of Behavioral Science. That's one more black mark for common sense. Did you spell the professor's name correctly?

Sure! Everyone is entitled to HIS or HER opinion! It is on this principle that the Founding Fathers established this nation. Opinions are classified under "The Pursuit of Happiness."
