Do you use text message marketing?

I work for one of the best text message providers in the country. I am just starting off with this company and I'm trying to think of all the different types of businesses who can use text marketing effectively. I also need to think of creative ways of present it to them.

To make one thing clear, we do not allow businesses to spam or just blast messages out to anyone or everyone! This is an opt-in only service and we completely compliant with all federal and industry regulations.

Here is what I have done so far....

Most of my sales focus in on owner operated restaurants, boutiques and coffee shops. We promote our service to them as a loyalty program/mobile VIP club. I get a great response for business, but its very hard to get them to try it out even though we don't require a contract.

So my question is, do you use text marketing? Is so, what industry are you in? Do you have any ideas on how I could offer this service, or do you know of a good niche market to talk to??

Text is very very effective, but many business owners are afraid of trying something new during these slow economic times.

Thanks for your help!

Update:

I forgot to mention that we also promote to clubs and bars and they are our best type of business so far.

The demographic you're targeting seems to be ideal for this type of communication. I believe once it got started, through word of mouth alone, it would become huge.

As a test/trial, go to the "in" bar where all of the "cool" business people go, hand them all or have delivered with their drinks a printed, high graphic, post card with a "x" number of days or a month free if they text you (number on the postcard) within a certain time frame. That's the best I can come up with. In addition you could also use the paper coasters that drinks are put on as your advertising vehicle.

Next step, get it on the bar/steak house/whatever's menu. Do a barter arrangement with the owner(s) like your services for a % off and you'll pay for the additional artwork costs for the new menus.

That's the best I can come up with.

I have a small income tax business in a small town in Ontario, so I do not use text messaging. Personally, I find the keyboards far too small to comfortably use this feature.

I work for a real estate company. We recently added text messaging to our 24/7 home hotline. Each property is given a code that gets printed in advertising...online...and on home yard signs. Each media source has a different "media code" at the end of the actual assigned number so we can track where our calls are coming from. A new feature we just started is if someone is calling the hotline number they can opt to receive a text message with information & photos on the house they are looking at.

Try presenting your company to ad agencies (online or interactive department). Most are extremely familiar with text marketing and each agency will have several clients they can apply it to. But be very prepared before you go because they hear pitches all day long.
