We moved into a house with a Satellite dish on the roof. Can we use it without having to purchase cable TV?

Is there some way a satellite dish can be used without having to purchase services from a company? I want to do it legally, but do not want to pay the outrages fees companies charge for the service. Also can a satellite dish be used for internet purposes without having to purchase broadband? Thanks for your answers

All of the questions can be answered with "no". YOu have to have a decoder.

Which you have to pay for, to someone.

It depends on the dish, but most likely is will be a dish for a pay TV system.

Most satellite dishes are receive only (internet is two way), and those that do work with internet service, are pay.

Your satellite dish is simply a microwave "transponder" - it receives and sends fairly simple messages using a geostatic satellite. However you have to be recognised by the satellite and the only legal way is to have an account with a satellite service provider (and, yes, they are expensive if not greedy!).

Cable is a fibre optic alternative to good old fashioned telephone wires but again it connects to an exchange and some company somewhere has to know your name, address, etc.

They have you one way or the other so check the bundle of services - broadband is usually a cable or a wireless link but rarely satellite.

It's called a split account. You need to have a receiver linked to another account and a local satellite tv installer to do it for you:

Or if it is Dish Network dish, you can set up Free to Air:

There is a cost no mater what you do as nothing is free EVER, however you can eliminate or reduce your bill by half .

to all of your questions, the answer is no. to be legally connected, you have to have a subscription from a satellite company like Dish. and to be able to get the signal for the satellite, you have to have the subscription for the broadband.

I think you can't, because all the channels are coded.

If you want to watch satellite TV without paying monthly fees there are many softwares available now that can help. (See the source link)
