Did you receive a welcome packet from your husband's unit?
Check who is your sponsor.
A friend of mine, who just made Army LTC he was a Major when he arrived to Hawaii, bought a house. If you buy can afford to buy and plan to stay, the tour will probably be 4 years, but living on an island is not for everyone. In 3 hours, you can pretty much drive around Oahu without stopping. Not to say buying is not for everyone. Everyone who I have known to have done a tour in Hawaii and bought a house made a profit. There are only so many houses around the posts.

What Branch of the Military, and where will he be stationed? That will make a difference, if you don't want to be too far from base. Also, do you want a house, townhouse (I believe these are often referred to as condos in a lot of places on the mainland), or apartment. How many rooms do you need? All of these will make a difference in the prices of rent. For Pearl Harbor (Navy) and Hickam (Air Force) There are the areas of Salt Lake, Aiea, and Pearl City. For Schofield Barracks (Army) I would choose Mililani over Wahiawa. MCBH (Marines) is the toughest for off-base housing in nearby communities. Kailua is closest, but expensive. Kaneohe is a little better, but not by much. Definately contact the family assistance program, as was suggested earlier. One more thing, be prepared for small square footage. When talking to people who moved here from the mainland, I find they are often shocked by what is considered big here. I looked at three different places recently while looking for a place. They were three bedrooms, 1 bath. In two of the places, all the bedrooms were 9' X 9', and at the third, one of the bedrooms was only 6' X 8.5'.

Wow shipping cars has really gone up since 1999. It was around $800 back then. Probably not worth it to pay that much to ship a car. I'd try to sell it and buy one over there. Even if you have to sell it $1000 under value, you're coming out better off. Once you get to Hawaii, there are plenty of used cars for sale from people with the same problem... cost too much to ship them back here. Another big issue is pets. If you have a dog or cat, read up NOW about what you're going to be faced with. When I went, they quarantined all incoming animals for weeks at your expense and it was expensive.

I would suggest you contact your base Family Services office.
They often have a bulletin board of sorts that will have rentals available or know of places that you can rent within your housing budget.
What branch of the military is your husband in? Where you can live comfortably for that price range will depend on where your husband is commuting to every day.
I would suggest you check out www.honoluluadvertiser.com or www.craigslist.com for what's available at what price. I would suggest you find a good map of Hawaii so that you know how far cities are from the base your husband will be stationed at.
Hope that helps you.....good luck!

My sister and her family moved to Oahu in January (because her husband is in the military) and when we went to visit her everyone talked about how ridiculously expensive the housing was. Your best bet is probably going to be just living on base.

I would try www.craigslist.com and look in the house section. I have found great places to rent and also condos to rent on vacation. Also you can call a local realtor like www.katebraden.com (whom I have used in the past to find a property and is amazing!) who can help you look for places to rent in oahu. Good Luck and Aloha!

Contact the military base your husband's transferring to. They have a family assistance program to help you identify housing options in the area.
