HELP!!! My dad's legs from knee's down to his feet are swollen. What else can I do?
He has a bad heart. Blood pressure is controlled with meds. The doctors have tried different things to correct this problem, he was on a diaretic but that lowered his sodium leave to much and had to be taken off it. This problem has been going on for 5 months now and I'm getting worried no one seems to be finding a way to fix it. His diet hasn't changed in the last 63 years so why now and how do I fix it?

I Had the same problem and found that if I keep my legs elevated such as when sitting in a recliner it really helped the problem. Also, make sure he wears socks as this helps as well. This condition is called adema(sp) and is a build-up of fluid within the tissues of the lower limbs. I think I would take your Dad to a different DR as this problem can be treated. I too am 63, diabetic, and high blood pressure but everything is under control. My sister in law, a nurse advised me to keep my feet elevated when sitting and it worked. Good luck.

I have recently had a heart attack and I know swelling can be caused by water retention.. the advice I know is as follows.
Elevate his legs above your heart while lying down.
Exercise his legs. This helps pump fluid from his legs back to his heart.
Wear support stockings (sold at most drug and medical supply stores). I have the Dr Scholls one's and they are great...
Try to follow a low-salt diet, which may reduce fluid retention and swelling. If it persists see the doctor as they may need to change his medication. Good luck, try not to worry too much....

Bad heart? You mean congestive heart failure? CHF can cause a back up of blood to the legs (peripheral edema). Usually treated with diuretics, ACE inhibitors, etc. May be other causes such as lymphadema, DVT, or a blockage higher up. This can be complicated, so really needs a big work-up.

I recommend contacting a new doctor. Most health plans allow for free 'Second Opinions'. Do tell the new doctor Everything. Good luck.

Pray for him in your nightly prayers before going to sleep is one thing you can do.
Another is for him to raise his legs when sitting to aid in circulation, like by putting them on a footrest or Ottoman.
