R&P, difference between facts and opinions?

Can we please differentiate between opinions and facts? I brought this topic up a while ago, that instead of saying that we shouldn't say that bands suck, just that we don't like them, and I'd like to bring this up again. There are people who say that bands suck as if it's a fact, when we all see music differently. Music is something that can be seen differently by everyone, so instead of saying that they suck, just say that you don't like them. Also, if it's not actually true, don't say that as well. Such as Slipknot not being able to play their instruments. That's is blatantly untrue. However, saying Dragonforce is... not as well put together, shall I say, live compared to the CD is okay, since that actually is true, and that they speed up their stuff in the studio, cause that's true too. We've all seen those videos. But, don't say that they're a terrible band. Just say you don't like them.

AND I DON'T ONE ANYONE TO TRY AND BE ALL CUTE BY GOING "OH, WELL I WON'T SAY SUCK. I'LL JUST SAY THEY BLOW. DURR-HUR-HUR."

Update:

@Kuja

Yeah that works. You're stating it as an opinion, not as if it's a universal fact.

Update 2:

@This Sentence Has 32 Characters

Yeah, you can't just say that they suck or you think they suck. You have to give some rational reason. Like the Dragonforce and JoBro example you gave. Those are actually backed up by facts. JoBros aren't the best songwriters (to put it mildly), are HORRENDOUSLY overrated, and D-Force does speed stuff up and is lackluster live. However, saying Slipknot can't play their instruments is just untrue.

Update 3:

We're getting some great answers here. Keep it up.

LOL! Good luck with that!! :-D

I always try to answer questions with an "I think" or a "for me..." or something like that, but that's because I'm a grown up with impeccable manners (JK!!!) ;-)

So... if people could only realize that all of this is simply a matter of taste ~ and taste is entirely subjective ~ then they would know that everyone's opinion is of as much value as anyone else's. And that includes the Jonas Bros / MCR / Hannah Montana and the rest of the wide, wide world. 15-year old screaming girls are as entitled to their taste as you are to yours (not yours, personally, exemplar... ~ I'm just sayin')

Realize that every bit of music is not going to appeal to every one and we'll be well on our way. Or well, we *could* be... but it ain't gonna happen. I think SO many people feel superior to others whose taste they look down upon that they *cannot* tell the difference between fact and opinion, and they aren't interested in learning. Too bad, too.

While the recession certainly did not end before Obama took office, declaring that Obama ended the Bush recession is an opinion--you would need to show how he ended it, unless it was a well-studied and nearly universally accepted cause and effect relationship. I haven't looked up how many illegals got deported, but if you are accurate on that, that is a good example of 'fact'. It's kind of funny. When the opinions people have grown up with are challenged, it often takes people a little time to realize that it is an opinion and not a fact being challenged. Once I was introduced to the concept of historiography, I found that a lot of things I thought were facts were actually opinions. Most don't get this kind of critical thinking in school. _____________ was the cause of the Civil War You can tell from the grammar and length of the blank which answer the teacher wants--and you get graded as if it is a fact, when it is a conclusion. And ahandle points out that you have facts and misleading facts. He points out that unemployment was higher under Obama than under Bush. He leaves out that everyone saw this coming. Obama was asked during the campaign whether unemployment would be under 10% in 2012, and he said that he thought it would be about 10% (an increase from what it was at the time)--anyone who paid attention knew unemployment was going up and that the question was how high would it get. And we all saw Michael Moore tell us that Bush personally 'deported' Bin Laden's family. Did he 'personally' deport anyone else? I know I was upset with how little the republicans did about immigration while they were in office, despite Bush asking them to get over the nonsense and get to work. Why bother with facts. Now Obama had a supermajority, lol.

The difference between opinion and fact is only clear in the realms of science(historical facts and statistics, like the one mentioned above on the Jonas Brothers or the fact that Jimi Hendrix died in 1970,loosely at least belong to that category)..When it comes to art,you can,I believe, compare things in certain contexts and set some standards.

And also, different opinions are not always purely a matter of taste. To be able to decide what your taste really is,you have to be aware of(a lot,at least,of) the available choices.YOU will give the freedom to yourself to choose,it's not automatically there. For example, what's imposed on us by the media and marketed as good music is not a matter of taste; when you like the Jonas Brothers because it's(almost) all you've really listened to or you are 13,immaturity and lack of knowledge comes to play.

Validity of opinion is a concept that exists.I do not think it's all a matter of taste,no matter how liberal and open-minded it sounds.

I try not to say any bands just plain sucks or anything like that. Every once in awhile when we are talking about jo bros or something like that I'll say the suck but i always give a good reason why they do.

Opinion Example: The Jonas Brothers are a Horrible Band, but Nick is cute.

Fact Example: The Jonas Brothers are consider my most Y!A as one of the worst bands ever, but 50% of the girl population thinks Nick is Cute.

In my opinion, when you say ________ sucks, and state it as a fact (rather than opinion), you must back it up. When people say the JBs suck, they often refer to their lack of talent and how overrated they are. When they say Dragonforce suck, they refer to their "speed wanking" and how they can't play their own material live.

While I do say that bands suck from time to time, I never condemn anyone for enjoying these bands. I even enjoy certain bands that I myself can say suck. To me, "suck" is equivalent to a lack of musical talent, creativity and integrity. That is not subjective.

Well, following this logic, the Jonas Brothers don't suck because Nick actually plays the guitar...

But I still don't like them...

OH, WELL I WON'T SAY SUCK. I'LL JUST SAY THEY BLOW. DURR-HUR-HUR.

Welllll whenever I say a bands suck it's truly just my opinion. :)

But come on, I think it's a fact that the Jonas Brothers suck because they don't even play their own flippin instruments!!!!!!!!

  • sorry man...

some bands do "suck", and if people like them, they like "sucky" bands.

ive been guilty of it myself. the difference is, if i like crap, its usually good crap.

some bands that really do "suck"...

the jonas brothers because they are exploted children who are popular because a nefarious corporation pimps them to folks who dont know any better

milli vanilli because they werent even them

the bay city rollers because they were also syrupy pop manufactured by a corporation

papa roach because they have almost no actual musical talent

linkin park because tenacity does not make you talented

tokio motel because it sucked when boy george did it and pale immitations are worse

my chemical romance because rock and roll should never be about whining titty baby bullsh!t

panic at the disco because they dont even realize they rip off legends

fallout boy because whiny crap still doesnt rock

miley cyrus and her father because she is an untalented exploited child and he is the pr!ck that exploits her

the cheetah girls because they were manufactured by the same corporate pieces of sh!t that gave us the jonas brothers

These bands suck, have always sucked and will always suck, no matter how many folks like them or how hard their corporations force their crap down young folks throats.

and if folks that enjoy these bands cant admit that they are artistically crap, they are self-delusional.

    ...and that is a fact

This one question isn't going to change anybody's habits. I, for example, will say that Slipknot and Dragonforce suck.
