Are there any TV shows you'd hate to see re-made into movies?

Since the 1990s, Hollywood has released a whole slew of movie adaptations of old TV shows (e.g. "Charlie's Angels", "Maverick", "The Honeymooners", "Mission Impossible", "The Flintstones", "Miami Vice", etc.).

And it doesn't seem like this trend will be ending any time soon, as there are upcoming movie adaptations in the works for old TV shows like "CHiPs" (which will star Wilmer Valderrama from "That 70s Show"), "Dallas" and "Welcome Back, Kotter" (starring Ice Cube in the title role of Gabe Kotter).

What do you think of this particular trend? Do you think it's just a way for Hollywood to revitalize classic TV concepts for younger audiences, or a shameless lack of creativity on the part of writers, directors, and producers?

Are there any classic TV shows which you would truly hate to see re-made into movies?

Would you be able to stomach future remakes of sitcoms like "The Golden Girls", "The Facts Of Life", "Three's Company", "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "WKRP In Cincinnati", "Will & Grace", "Married With Children", "Everybody Loves Raymond" or "Friends"?

Also, what do you think of the way Hollywood has re-done some serious old shows as comedies (e.g. "CHiPs", "Starsky & Hutch")?

How would you feel about seeing serious-themed shows like "Hill Street Blues", "Law & Order", "ER", "The West Wing", "The O.C.", "One Tree Hill" or "C.S.I." re-done as wacky, outrageous comedies along the lines of "American Pie" and "Meet The Spartans"?

NOTE: Obviously movies like "Sex and the City", "Serenity" or the Star Trek and X-Files movies wouldn't be considered to be remakes, as they simply continue from the original TV shows on which they're based with the original casts, rather than re-casting the roles with new actors.

Update:

Mercurial Mich: I totally agree that the Brady Bunch movies were great! I think the reason why they worked was because they were spoofing a sitcom that became cheesy in its later seasons.

When you spoof a serious-themed show however, it doesn't work as it's disrespectful to both the original premise and fans of the show, regardless of whether it may seem dated by today's standards. Everything becomes dated over time, and it's rather immature for people being unable to focus get on a show's story content/characterization because they can't get over old hairstyles, fashion, etc. That's why "Starsky & Hutch" was utter garbage.

As for "Buck Rogers", I agree that the 80s show was unintentionally cheesy (which made it funny). Because Buck Rogers was originally based on a series of novellas, any new versions we see would more likely be new adaptations/reinterpretations of the original source, rather than a remake of the TV show.

Update 2:

Sorry, I meant "focus" not "focus get".

if you think that list is bad

imagine the fact that Giligans Island, not too long ago (dont know what happened to the plans) was up for 3 movies. One was to be a prequel, not sure about the other 2.

or that Green Acres was gonna become a movie with Rosie O'Donnel (i keep hearing talk of a movie in the works but dont know what its situation is) playing a man.

I would like to see Peanuts done, but doubt with Schultz's death it will ever happen now. But it was to be a grown up movie about them.

There is actually a plan to finish "Lost" with a movie. I think this is an interesting strategy because it forces viewers to commit to the show. After all who would go and see a film unless they knew what it was going to be about? It's a definite case of cashing in instead of selling out. The risk is that if the show jumps the shark, people won't bother seeing the movie. There are going to be six seasons of lost and at £50 a box set the movie ticket is going to cost anyone who didn't watch it on TV a whopping £300 plus the cost of the cinema ticket to REALLY know what's going on, so the audience may be limited. Having said that there are often catch-up shows, and I expect the movie will start with a recap because that's the nature of Lost, flashbacks are a persistent theme. I hope we're not all disappointed. I remember when X-files "ended" with a movie, except you still didn't get a definitive answer, the truth wasn't out there. That was very frustrating. As far as a TV show that would make a good movie is concerned, I'd pick Police Camera Action. I love watching all those car chases from the helicopter and all the crazy stuff perople get up to, add a story line and a foxy WPC or two and you might have a blockbuster!

I think the only truly clever transition of a TV show into a movie was The Brady Bunch - transporting the squeaky clean 1970s family directly into the grungy 1990s was pure genius, and very funny!!

I'd hate to see Buck Rogers in the 25th Century made into a movie. The original is such a classic because it's so dated and funny even though it's not really meant to be!

I wouldn't mind if the remade Dallas, Dynasty, and maybe I Love Lucy. Serious themed shows should be left alone and if they remake The Golden Girls or The Cosby Show I think I'll be really upset. I heard somewhere that they are remaking 21 Jump Street but with a female lead.

Golden Girls was one of the first to come to mind.

I don't like what I've seen of the Futurama movies.

I HATE the new Battle Star Galactica series, and would probably hate any attempts at movies of it.

I think Seventh Heaven would be nice, I mean, if the plot would be 10 years after. Coz the ending wasn't that good. But the others, a big NO NO!!!!

full house and or family matters would be the absolute worst tv to movie adaptations ever.

  • Ok, Friends would be a good movie, but the others would not.
