Clipped our pug's nail, now he's bleeding?

we accidently just tried to clip our pugs nails with a pet clipper and cut his nail too short, now its bleeding profusely. What do we do to stop the bleeding? Thanks

Update:

I'm sorry. I dont have a styptic pen and we only cut one nail. I have a clipper for dogs and he moved. I would never try to hurt him, I just wanted to clip his nails cause they were sharp.

Update 2:

Thank you so much everyone. I put the nail in some flour and it seems be slowing down. I'm off to get some kwik stop and I will NOT be attempting that again...poor pooch :(

Corn starch or flour are things around the house you can use.

Not to worry, it happens sometimes. If you want you can get this stuff called Kwik Stop at the pet store for future accidents.

You do not need to take him to the vet, he will be just fine.

I would say that you may what to look into maybe dremmeling the nails at home, you are less likely to get them that way, owners seem to feel more comfortable...look into getting something like the Peticure.

Press the nail tip firmly into a pile of some cornstarch or flour if you don't have styptic powder. It will do in a pinch. That should stop the bleeding. Then keep him quiet for a while so it doesn't start up again. In the future, make sure you have Kwik Stop or another styptic powder handy before you clip nails.

Oh no, hopefully it is not to deep into the quick. If you cut it to deeply you could have caused nerve damage and it may be very difficult to stop bleeding. Try holding wash rag or towel on it with pressure applied to the tip until it stops, keep an eye on how much blood is being lost by the dog though if it doesn't stop in about 10 minutes or so I would take it to the vet. If the bleeding at least slows to the point of trickling or just bleeding a little bit he should be fine. He would have to lose a lot of blood before he becomes lethargic or dies so he should be ok unless you cut extremely deep. Accidents like this don't usually result in dead but many times the nerves in the nail can be damaged.

My uncle did the same thing to his dog a few years back. If it is bleeding really bad, you need to take him to the vet. If the bleeding is slowing down, wrap it up and apply pressure to it. I never try to clip my dogs nails on my own because I am so afraid that will happen. It's very dangerous, because you can't see what is in the nail. Try to file them down with a Peticure, or even an emery board if you have one. If your dog lets you clip his nails with that thing, the emery board should work. Good luck. Hope your dog is okay.

I had the same problem . Keep the styptic pen or cream always when clipping Not too many pups enjoy clipping I have had 2 pugs and my new guy hates it Good Luck to you.

When that happened to us I think we put rubbing alchol on the nail. Instead of using clippers you should try the peticure for dogs. It shaves/ grinds the nail down and doesn't cause pain or bleeding for the dog. I haven't used one but I didn't order one and it sounds great. I think the website is www.peticure.com or the other is www.pedipaws.com

you can use corn starch, and the next time you decide to clip nails make sure you go to the pet store and buy some kwick stop..it is wonderful to have on hand for them accidents..don't feel bad as this kinda thing happens to allot of people, especially if the nail is to dark to see the vein..good luck

Stypic powder is a great way to help stop the bleeding if you cut your dog (or cats) nails too short. You can get it in the first aid isle of any pet store.

Apply pressure to the area, after it has slowed down put corn starch on the nail.
