I'm letting my kid play hooky tomorrow. Any ideas?

Ok...so he's a good kid (11 yrs. old) and gets really good grades plus he's awesome and great company. I havent spent much time with him lately and I feel kinda bad, so tomorrow, were both playin hooky and hangin together.Problem is, I dont know what in the world to do with him. Were native NY'kers and neither of us would really wanna do the tourist thing (Statue of Liberty/Empire State....blehhhh) so I'm wondering what other cool things could we do together in a 8 hours span in this great city of ours.

And please dont suggest Hooters or Scores.....I figure I'd save that for when the kid turns 12.

Other than that any OTHER great ideas appreciated!

The Bronx Zoo is educational and fun at the same time. Two of my forum members went on a Monday and you can see their review.

I don't know what part of the City you live in, but the Hall of Science in Queens is a great place for kids of that age. There are tons of hands on things you can do together. It's fun for both of you and you can really spend time together.

Also, I'm told that the Liberty Science Center in Staten Island is like that. I've never been (it's so far out on Staten Island) but my kids have gone with their school classes and they love it!

And I agree about the Bronx Zoo. If you don't want to go that far, the Central Park Zoo is smaller, but is still cool in it's own way.

Take him to a broadway show. Even if he isn't interested in theatre, there is a new show that just opened in the beginning of October called "13." He is the perfect age for the show, because the show is all about the beginning of the teenage years and the changes that happen.

This new show is the first ever to hit Broadway with an all teenage cast and all teenage band. It is quite exciting. The music is so catchy, upbeat, and I'm sure your son will enjoy it.

Also there is alot of discount tickets you can buy, since the show just opened and they are trying to reel in the viewers and publicity. I hope you use my idea and see the show, because it is so comical and cleverly written. You will not regret this decision! Good luck

go to www.13themusical.com for more info and tickets!!

  • I'm not sure if the Arcade in Times Square is still open but you can both go there. How about the bowling alley in Chelsea Piers? That's a lot of fun because the place is almost pitch black and the balls glow in the dark. :) How about the movies? Is there a movie out now that he really wants to see?

Sounds like maybe it's been a while since the two of you spent time together if you don't know what he would like to do. Have you asked him for some suggestions? I think that the options would be endless in NYC.

I don't believe in playing hooky, even if you're passing. Instead, you could've waited till Halloween (it falls on a Friday) to take him to a party or trick or treating.
