    In order:

    1. It is just up to an individual's taste. I think a lot of fans of animation prefer 2D but the general public likes 3D.

    2. It really depends on the the studio and other things. An animation director might have a more administrative role at a place like Disney/Pixar but at a smaller studio he might be more likely to actually animate. Either way the director will generally have a good deal of influence on the nature on the final production.

3 .Not necessarily but having a good artistic sense is important. Knowing the kinds of things a good artist knows is very helpful (proportions, perspective, etc.) You won't need to know how to paint or sculpt but a good sense of aesthetics will valuable.

Yes, an animator needs to know how to draw really well. Especially 2d ones. 3d animators usually don't JUST to animation so having a well-rounded portfolio that includes alot of drawing will help you greatly.

Most comapanies will take someone who is an awesome animator AND an awesome draftsman over someone who doesn't know how to draw and is still an awesome animator.

that is form of of a false impression as the two 2d and 3-D are genuinely 2d (i.e. flat exhibit). in case you may visualise the adaptation between say the lively function "Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs" and the lively function "Schrek", the 1st is 2d, the latter is 3-D.
