Can you recommend a nice restaurant in Sn.Francisco?
I'd like to treat my boyfriend to a special birthday dinner in a nice place, problem is -- his birthday is on Dec.31st, so I would think of celebrating on the 30th, since it won't be that expensive and crowded.
Any thoughts on this? We'll be staying in the Fisherman's Wharf area

The last thing you want to do is eat at Pier 39. FYI. I made that mistake. Take the trolley down to the Ferry Building and try out La Mar. It's a new Peruvian restaurant with a modern take on a flavour. Pricing for that restaurant ranges from $14 - $30. There is also Houston's, a great steakhouse not far from Fishermans' Wharf. Great food for about the same price-point as La Mar. Try looking around on Yelp.com and the type of food is all catagorised by type and location.

My husband and I visit SF quite often and love Fisherman's Wharf. There are a few good restaurants. Pier 39 Crabhouse is good. They have great butter and garlic roasted crab legs. Down a little way towards Gheridelli Square there is Scoma's. An old SF favorite. And has been a family favorite for decades. They have a great Italian Seafood menu. If you drive they have free valet parking. Check out their website.

I had one of the best meals I've had at Fleur de Lys. It is a formal French restaurant, but I found the staff to be very friendly. It can be somewhat expensive. If you are looking for a good place that is not as expensive go to the Slanted Door in the Ferry Market building.
Checking out Michael Bauer's Blog may be helpful as well. He is a well respected critic in San Francisco.

Sooooooooooooooo many good restaurants, none of which you will find in such a touristy spot. Check the local reviews.
My favorite restaurant in Sf is Canteen, but maybe not special-occasion enough? Top 2 special experiences are Gary Danko & Michal Minna, probably. I have no idea who you are or what you mean by "nice." Do you love food or do you just want a memorable spot?
