Muslims: Why do Muslim women wear Hijab?

Well here are the reasons/commands from the Quran and Sunnah (What the Prophet said or did).

In the Quran, God states: "Say the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty...And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and adornments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers...(a list of exceptions)" [Chapter 24, verses 30-31] Also, "O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons...that they should be known and not molested." [Chapter 33, verse 59]

In one Hadith (traditional reporting), the Prophet Muhammad is quoted as saying: "...If the woman reaches the age of puberty, no part of her body should be seen but this --- and he pointed to his face and hands."

Now if you want more, whats considered modesty? If your Christian you would agree Mary the mother of Jesus is the utmost role-model for Christian women correct? Whenever you see depictions of Mary she's covering her hair, her whole body w/the exception for her hands and face? Quite interesting. She's dressed like a Muslim or Muslims are dressed like her, in any case modesty is always changing based on the times... or so people say, but when you look at what Modesty is, It never changes. If you see a women wearing what is popular today or a women covering who are you going to tell me is modest? Of course the women covering. In Islam the 'requirements' or rules for modesty never change, they are absolute they shouldn't change with the times. People will say Islam is backwards b/c its still as it was 1,400 years ago, thats really a compliment on how well Islam has been preserved that it hasn't changed. (For the most part, you have your sects.)

If you look into Pauls writings (specifically Corinthians) it is stated that women should cover their hair or shave it off, now people argue on the meaning of the verses that it doesn't go with the age were living in it was only for way back then etc. Nonetheless its stated in the Bible to cover your hair, so yeah just thought that might be interesting.

To show modesty but perhaps they haven't realised that ALL women look the same without their clothes on so there is actually nothing to hide in the first place.

Edit3: There are actually honour killings going on in the West too (even here in the UK). There was a girl last year who was raped by her father and brother, strangled, chopped up and dumped in another city in the suitcase. Scary. Look on www.youtube.com for interviews from terrified daughters who are on the run from thier families. I feel so sorry for them.

Yeah, the reason is that Muslim men don't want any other man to see their women. I think it is because they feel insecure.

Maybe Muhammad made it up to keep other men from looking with lust at his 9 year old wife.

actually, and speaking of rape, the highest rates of rape happen to be in the usa and europe, and what really shocks is a large part of rape in usa happens within family members, they rape their sisters and daughters, they rape children and they create an art for raping children, child pornography. men in the usa rape their daughters and their infant children. men there rape their sons!!!! which is even worse!!! they rape their students and blood relatives. men also in the usa get girls pregnant and dumb them. they sleep with girls and do not call. they treat girls like scum. muslim men on the other hand, commit to any girl that they get pregnant even though most muslim countries do not oblige you to do that. muslim men do not get you pregnant in the first place if they do not want to marry u. muslim men do not SLEEP with you if they do not want to commit to a relationship, generally speaking. muslim men do not rape their daughters and sons. and above all they do not get their daughters pregnant. this is due to one reason, islam respects women and do not treat them like an object, and do not judge a woman for her looks.

dear debbi, what u said about some people killing women in muslim countries because they get raped is right and wrong. u are suggesting that islam orders to kill women who get raped or even have sexual relationships? ur wrong. people who do that are just blinded by stupid tribes traditions, islam does not order to kill women who get raped dear. many christian girls in arab countires were killed by their fathers for comitting adultry. and no raped women do not get killed. and no rape is highest in the west. please get ur facts right. rapist are loose there in the west, you are extremely lucky when they catch them.

this marrt another wife thing doesn't happen as much as you think, they just like to bring it up whenever they want to attack islam, and people here divorce unlike u said if it is not working, i dont know why people say these things about not being able to divorce!!!! its all lies. plus, talking about second wives, men in the west constantly cheat on their "older wives" and even young wives, 9 out of 10 men cheat and make their wives life miserable, and sometimes the marriage continues because women say they are used to their husbands cheating and they will still be with them because they love their husbands. while cheating is not acceptable in muslim cultures, so here its way much less than their, its literally rare. at least the "other woman : second wife in islam " have rights

3 out of 5 women get beat up by their husbands in the usa. islam forbids beating up women, and takes it as a cowardly action. i live in a muslim country and i know well that rape isnt a normal activity as much as it is in the usa, simply because here it is safer.

edit 2: yeah that happens due to stupid traditions and this is limited to a small number of very under developed groups like Bedouin tribes but it has to do nothing with islam, like i said christian arabs killed their daughters for honor reasons. but if u compare these numbers to people killed over the weirdest reasons in the west on the other hand, u'll see that there is a psychological problem going on. 3 people are killed in the usa every 28 seconds. its a shame.

Bullshit modesty laws. The same laws appear in the bible, by the way (at least when it comes to church) -- though most Christians seem unaware of that little tidbit.

Because they are to cover themselves from Islamic men, who are natural rapists when confronted with a woman's body.

This is why Amazonian tribes people spend 99.999% of their time raping each others wives.
