What is with this mermaid thing?

Why do so many young girls have a mermaid fixation? I'm talking about this "Oh, help, I'm becoming a mermaid" and "anybody know any good spells to make me become a mermaid" thing. I don't remember this being around when I was a young girl, so I am figuring there must be some kind of cultural trigger. In my day most young girls wanted to become witches. I see some of that today, but I've never encountered this mermaid thing. Is it a bid for attention? Is it derived from some new role playing game I'm unaware of? Do they feel they are being creative and different by posting these types of questions? Are they playing a game and want others to play along?

I am always interested in what makes people tick. Would someone who knows something about psychology care to comment?

Update:

Jealous? Of what? Please read more carefully -- I would like to understand the phenomenon of young girls wanting to be/claiming to be mermaids. In my day many young girls claimed to be witches. I was not one of them, and I never really understood it. Many of the posts in the Mythology section are about young teenagers wishing they were mermaids or claiming to be turning into them. Instead of dismissing it as kid-foolishness, I was curious to find out exactly why they were doing it.

Disney, yes, I can see the connection.

Well, lets see I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but here goes....Ariel sends the message that all you will do just about anything for love. She is a strong character since she disobeys her father and follows her heart. Adult women and little girls even like the style of her hair. Starting early in life we are taught that being kind, helpful, strong, brave, heroic are all good things to be. We see images every day of what the a good family life is suppose to be. Disney movies often touch people in a strong way because the creators are very good a creating a movie the is based entirely around what we are taught is good. All Disney movies end with that "Happily Ever After" because it is easier to accept that all things will work out in the end rather than face the cold hard reality that life is just not that way. Disney is about invoking emotion making the watcher feel for the character ultimately causing you to want everything to work out because the character has already had such a tough time. When the movie ends you are left with the feelings of joy and happiness causing you to think in different ways. However once whatever feelings were invoked in you wear off you no longer feel that way. And at this point big and little girls become uninterested. The End!

Lets see, aside from haloween type trends, noone really like witches. I mean, the word witch is used as an insult. Why would the girls these days want to be a witch? Plus they have a horrible reputation for being hideous, aside from just being hated.

Mermaids are known to be beautiful, mystical creatures. Almost like a unicorn, but so so much better. The girls wanna be something thats impossible to get, and that everyone wants. Everyone wants a mermaid!!

Don't be jealous because you are a witch and they are mermaids!

I have never in my life heard a girl say they want to be a mermaid.

If so I don't remember but I think I know why girls say that maybe because they want to be pretty as a mermaid and have a tall rather than legs.I think I rather be a mermaid so i can swim but I think I also want to be a witch so I could fly and make spells.
