Green Cards for non-immigrants ?

As a retired British visitor to the U.S., the 90-day visas are often insufficient for the extensive amount of travelling which I like to do.

Is it possible for me to get a non-immigrant green card, which would

allow me to stay longer than 3 months at a time ?

No, you cannot get a green card for tourism in USA. You can apply for a Visitor visa, however. This visa would allow you to stay as a tourist in USA for up to 6 months at a time.

Please keep in mind that your intentions for an extended stay in USA should be purely tourism, etc. If a visitor's visa is denied for any reason, you won't be allowed to come to USA on a Visa Waiver (up to 90 days, as you can now).

If you came under a Visa Waiver (90 days), you cannot extend your stay, but must return to UK.
