What color should I paint my room that has black and white furniture?

I am looking to purchase a mix of black and white furniture which I have already picked out. I am getting a black desk with a small white 2 or 3-drawer chest to go under it and off to the side with black inserts inside the drawers. I got a black chair and a white tabletop stand that will sit on my desk. I also have a white bedframe and a white dresser. I will be getting black shelves above the white bed, and a white shelving unit above the black desk.

My question is what color should I paint the walls of this room (leaving the ceiling white) and also, what color carpet should I get? My room is extremely small and has been dull for years so I want something to make it peaceful and enjoyable to study in and relax. I saw on the Ikea website a calm blue colored wall that went nice with black and white picture frames that I thought might make the room look relaxing. I am getting my room painted in about 5 days so please, any comments/advice will be helpful!

Update:

I forgot to mention, I love the comments below about the unique colors to paint the walls but I am a male so I would like to avoid colors like purple, and lilac. Keep coming with the suggestions and thanks to those who have already commented!

Update 2:

What about the carpet color? I mentioned that above but I believe it was overlooked due to the topic of my question.

Seth: I'm interested in the color you picked out, any suggestions on the carpet? What color carpet do you have in the room you mentioned that is similar to the furniture colors that I have? Can you e-mail me a picture by any chance? iencorei@yahoo.com

I would suggest Autumn Fog by Valspar (purchased at Lowe's.) It is a very beautiful, calming blue-ish grey. I have my office painted this color with white trim and black and white furniture and accessories and I love the way the color pops against the black and white. If you want relaxing, I highly recommend this color.

Carpet color: I would go with a light grey to keep it neutral and still blend with the other colors being used. We have a wood floor in our office but if we had carpet, I would probably choose a grey. Our office is still in the middle of being finished, but I can send you a pic over the weekend when (hopefully) everything will be pretty much back in place.

I would go with a light tan or a light blue because your room is small. Darker colors make it look smaller. Or you could just paint one wall. Everything in my house is black white and brown. I love it. It looks really classy while being very relaxing =) Add some throw pillows and candles =)

I agree with above me for a deep purple, with white trim, or perhaps a deep orange, or even a burgundy.

Any dark colors would go well with the scheme, especially with white trim to go with the cieling and accent the furniture.

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think a green like "espalier" (# 6734) walls color would look great with a light gold/green carpet.

You can take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & for $5 they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

a light or ice blue will be very calming and cooling. it matches well with your checkerboard furniture. Might I suggest you paint your whole room checkerboard pattern? it would look very cool.

    carpet-off white or white

brown or dark green will be ok ,if you think that looks a little simple or monotonus, you can decorate your room with nice wall stickers, such as I Fell Sweet And Fresh Of Green Melody Wall Sticker, that will add sth for you
