We had to come up with the Free trade agreement with you because your business leaders refuse to trade in good faith, and for that matter still don't!!! Our businesses had to constantly fight US countervail, antidumping or other safeguard actions; and we had to try and get agreement on what Canadian government assistance to industry would be free from countervail.Yet even today, all kinds of US businesses get financial help from your government, often because of the poor business practices of your business leaders (look at the recent bank bailout in your country). Your country wanted all trade in services and intellectual property included in the Free Trade agreement; unhindered access for investment in Canadian industries, particularly the energy sector, without Canadian federal government surveillance or restrictions; and limits on government policies generally which might reduce US exports (in other words you wanted as always to exploit us, just like you want to exploit everyone you enter trade with!!).

It is a fact that since the Free Trade agreement with your country came into place, Canadian dependence upon the US as a market for exports has increased from 74.5% in 1988 to 82% in 1996!! Canada is a larger market for U.S. goods than all 27 countries of the European Community combined!! Without us as a market your companies would all go bankrupt due to lack of demand for your products!
